Attractive, clear and irresistible! A wonderful book for adults and children
I have played chess for over sixty years (very averagely) and am introducing my grandchildren to the game. This fabulous little book describes clearly and simply things I would never have been able to put into such simple words and pictures. This includes everything from clearly identifying pieces and their moves, to basic rules, tips and strategies.Highly recommended. Will probably get another copy for my self!

Excellent book, exactly what a beginner needs!
Firstly, I was also surprised by how thin this book is but then when you start reading it you realise they've captured everything you need to get playing in a very straightforward way. Any more information and it might be off-putting for younger readers. It covers set-up, piece moves and even some basic tactics.Castling & en passant are also in there!I'm not sure why they felt the need to add intenert links (I haven't checked any of them out), the book is fine on it's own.My six year old is able to read the book and is starting to get to grips with Chess!Great value at under £4 inc delivery!!Just bought a second copy for my 60+ year old father-in-law!

It did not disappoint: with a little help from his dad
I needed something very basic and concise for a 6 year-old beginner whose first language is not English. It did not disappoint: with a little help from his dad, the boy really got hooked up to it and he is now learning chess fast.I quite like the illustration and the layout of drawings and photos inside the booklet, so well done Usborne Publishers, often releasing good books for young people. I haven't checked the links to the internet website but it's nice to have the option anyway.

Good value intro for absolute beginners
Great intro to Chess. I bought this for my son who is 11 years old. I had already taught him how the pieces move but I didn’t know a great deal else. We both learnt a lot from this book and became better at chess overnight. It is a short book which my son and I both read and understood in one go. A great introduction and was very cheap. If you already know the basic moves and principles you will be better off getting something more advanced such as the excellent Eade and Lawrence Chess Players Bible which we are now using.

good book, with a great title
I purchased this book with a chess set for my ten year old nephew. It seems to be the ideal book for teaching chess. I like the way it is taught with good clear text and pictures....One of the reasons that I chose this book above all the other beginner chess books on Amazon is that it is called ''starting chess'' as opposed to ''children's chess'' or a child's chess book'' which so many seem to be called and which I don't think my nephew would have liked. Just because of the ''child'' in the title...It doesn't matter how great the book is he would have turned his nose up at it, just because of the title..

excellent book
my 7-year-old started chess club and my husband & I don't play. He picked up this book immediately and read it to himself. It has little puzzles in to test your understanding, and great pictures and language to really engage a child. He has started to teach us, now and this book and a cheap chess set is alll you need

Appealing
Bought for grandson as a Christmas present. It looks a well laid out guide, colourful and appealing. Whether he becomes a Boris Spasky remains to be seen

My 7 Yr Old Loves It
Perfect book for my 7yr old. I then bought another to give to his friend as a present so they could learn together. Explains in simple and engaging terms. Easy to follow. I looked at lots of other books for teaching kids to play and I'm really glad I bought this one
