.com Les Claypool's premature midlife crisis has resulted in the second of two grandiose albums in under four months. But Live Frogs--Set 2, recorded at the same two-night stint in San Francisco as the first set, is a much different beast than the inventive jam-band noodlings of its predecessor. And beast is the operative term. The bass master decided to take on the darkest of Pink Floyd's albums, doing an almost note-perfect rendition of Animals. Claypool and company have subsumed Roger Waters's nihilistic lyrics and rendered them even spookier by giving them a more ominous comic-book feel--imbuing the words with much more irony and adenoidal bite than Waters and David Gilmour's original sterile, android-like vocals. Although Frog Brigade's made-for-TV version of the bleak anthropomorphic classic lacks the subtle orchestration of the original, they do make up for it in sheer zealousness and invention. --Jaan Uhelszki

Les Claypool pulls off the impossible
If I had heard about this Les Claypool project in advance I wouldn't have believed it. I mean the audacity of attempting to cover PINK FLOYD's most underrated,, complex (and I would argue finest) album, ANIMALS, with its 17 minute long song DOGS, is the very deffintion a monumental task. And then to do the whole album from beginning to end live! I don't think Roger Waters himself would even dare to attempt such a feat. Needless to say when I put the CD in for the first time I was highly skeptical that even the bass playing maestro from PRIMUS could pull this one off. Not only did the Frog Brigade pull it off which is nothing short of amazing, but their interpretation of this 1977 masterpiece enhanced my appreciation for the original as well as giving me a deep, deep respect for Les Claypool as a reverent student of music, not to mention a musician of the first order. I put this disc in and didn't take it out of my player for a week and a half. If you know ANIMALS you are in for a very rare musical treat/tribute/interpretation with this one, if you don't know ANIMALS you are missing out on one of the highest peaks on the musical landscape, but you will still be blown away by Mr. Claypool's orchestration and spot on musicianship. And when you hear the audience clapping and realize that it is a live recording you're head will begin to swim, and after all, isn't that what PINK FLOYD is really all about. I envy you your first listen.

Incredible Musicianship, Jaw-Dropping Performance
I bought this disc unsure of what to expect: I am a casual fan of Primus, enjoyed some of Claypool's collaborations and excursions with Buckethead and others, and certainly am a big Pink Floyd fan, though Animals is not one of my favorites, so I was not sure what this would sound like. Here's the answer: Amazing! It's a jaw-dropping showcase of top-flight musicians, jamming and grooving on an album they obviously know and love. It's clear they are enjoying every minute, and the results speak for themselves, the music recalls the album but does not mimic it, with pure inspired performances from start to finish. Indeed, I have new-found appreciation for both this band and for the original Animals, which I promptly pulled out to listen after hearing this re-imagination.It's also a bit different from other "stunt" albums along these lines, such as Phish's live Halloween tributes to the Beatles or The Who, which are ok but have more of a loose, fooling-around kind of vibe. This is the real deal, these musicians are deadly serious about making it work, they are invested in the material and the performances and it shows. Although Gilmour and Waters have nothing to worry about as far as Claypool's vocals are concerned, this one is a winner and I highly recommend.

99% Flawless, Extreme detailed atmosphere!!!
I've been a huge Pink Floyd fan for the last 20 years and Animals was always the "Dark" albumn you'd listen to when in certain moods...I've always liked Primus, but was never a HUGE fan.. until thier DVD came out and it seemed every other weekend I'd be jonesin to watch it.. I looked through the catolog of Les Claypool and found this.. 1 week later it came to my house and was put in without a second...This CD has such a rock solid foundation of the original it is amazing! It actually seems more busy than the original meaning the bass just jumps out at you.. I guess I was expecting Les Claypool to adlib parts of bass, but he never does..It is a serious duplicate of the original.. Its got it all.. Voice Box guitars, keyboards, sounds like Gilmour himself is playing.. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who is a Pink Floyd fan.. This beats the crap outta Roger Waters solo "Live Wall" disaster... which is nuts cause that was 1/4 Floyd..

Fate!
The first time I saw Primus (Sept. 2, 1990 at Sundance, a venue Les once told me he considered to be "Skinhead Hell"), the pre-show music being played was Pink Floyd Animals. Animals is my favorite Floyd album, and I was really excited to see Primus, so the Animals/Primus combo made for a perfect evening. Now we have Live Frogs-Set 2. I shudder when I think about how I missed my chance to see Les cover Animals in its entirity live on stage. It is fate that one of my favorite musicians loves one of my favorite albums enough to cover it, but now I have the CD, so it's all good.Live Frogs-Set 2 comes very close to sounding exactly like Floyd, with its own stylings. Les and the Frog Brigade took great care in preparing for this set. Everything is in order and it sounds amazing.Fans of Animals and Les Claypool would be crazy to not own this CD.

Awesome live cover of Pink Floyd "Animals"
Heard part of this album on my Sirius satt. subscription, on the Deep Tracks channel.I was really surprised to hear such a good cover of "Animals" (Pink Floyd) by Les Claypooland his Frog Brigade. Its live which I'm not one for live recordings. But the performance is dead on.You can tell that they truly know this album note for note and perform it pretty muchflawlessly. So I decided to take the chance and order the whole album as what I heardjust made me want to hear more.Bottom line is if your into Pink Floyd and would like to hear a serious cover of the album"Animals" done live by a band that is serious about the music and there performing it.Buy It!!!!You will be pleasantly surprised.

This Cover Rocks!
Darker than the original Pink Floyd recording and excellent musicianship for a live set. Dead on. I almost like it better than the original PF studio recording and that is saying a lot since 'Dogs' from 'Animals' is one of my favorite three PF recordings.

Don't event wait, just get it. It's just that good.
If you're a fan of Pink Floyd's Animals album, you will absolutely love this CD. Les Claypool and his Frog Brigade pull off a phenomenal performance from start to finish. Can't recommend it highly enough. Exceptional musicianship and attention to detail. The fact that this is a live performance is truly amazing. I heard a snippet of Dogs on SiriusXM and had to have it. It's on heavy rotation on all my devices now: car, home, mobile, cloud player. I'm all for a video review but needs a better interface here Amazon.Best,Bubba Lou in Texas

It's Animals, and it's .....
So, the seemingly fearless Les Claypool has offered up a complete tribute to the album Animals by the mighty Floyd! A highly under-rated album from the Pink back catalogue, and my personal fave, so this had to be interesting....Interesting? How about, better than I could have hoped for? This is bloody brilliant! They've managed to capture the sound, feel and emotion of the original and it's nice to hear the attention to detail. They obviously love this album and it really shows. A fan of Les Claypool? A fan of Floyd? Then you really need to own this. Top notch stuff. 10 stars if it were possible!

Animals
