Seized by a cup of Darjeeling and an unexpected love affair
Luckily for me, Father Christmas paid for it! The price was eye-watering, for me at least.A few days holiday and a couple of thirst-driven visits to tea rooms in Boulogne and Wimereux, France, were all it took for me to realise that Mariage Freres teas were nothing at all like the disappointing teas which were all I'd ever encountered at home in the UK. These were a revelation! The taste was sufficiently captivating that, for the first time in more than 60 years, I not only enjoyed a cup of Darjeeling, I longed for the next one!Mariage teas are not cheap but they are without doubt the finest teas I've ever tasted and I now buy some each year as a special treat for myself. At least they are less expensive than wine. It was on that basis that I wanted to know something more about this company, possibly the French equivalent of Fortnum & Mason, Jacksons or Harrods. The book, which is lavishly illustrated, makes fascinating reading. I haven't read all of it yet, but I turn to it regularly for reference as well as for reading pleasure. If you have a love of tea and its history (I know, that makes me sound like an obsessive), then this may well be the book for you. Look for a good second-hand copy, then buy it while you can!
