Silverline Folding Shovel 580mm (839280)

Okay, I bought this because it was cheap, but, I have to say I am really impressed! I haven't needed to to use it yet but first impressions are excellent. The shovel is steel and solid, the brackets appear well welded (I'm no welder but I can weld), the handle is plastic but feels very strong, the conecting piece is square section aluminium under a plastic collar. This collar is the weak point but by design it shouldn't be taking the stress and I don't think this should be an issue. The sawblade isn't sharpened, not sure how effective that will be but I doubt anyone will buy it as a saw anyway. The shovel head is normal size but the handle length is short (total length is a little under 60cm, folded length a little more than a third of that), this is an entrenching tool not a spade, I wouldn't buy it for building or to dig the garden, but for latrine pits when camping or as an emergency tool to get your car out of mud or snow I think this is an excellent choice, solid and compact for storage. All in all it feels like a far more expensive tool. Very impressed.

Used it for the first time when I got stuck in the snow off road (in a van) February 2021. I had snow chains but to fit them i had to clear around the wheels. Turned out the farm track I was stuck on had a few inches of fresh snow sat on top of about an inch of clear ice then saturated mud and rocks underneath. This small shovel made light work of it all. Small enough to get in behind the wheels yet sturdy and sharp enough to be highly effective. If I didn't have this I wouldn't have been able to fit the snow chains and would have been stranded overnight in sub zero temperatures in a blizzard. I would recommend this to anyone in a heartbeat.

To be clear I love this little spade but could not in all good conscience give it 5 stars. I'm a avid mountain biker and love to give back and assist with trail maintenance. I often carry one of these spades in backpack when going on trail days. The spades are great for very light use on already very loose soil. It is not good for digging. I mainly use it for rebuilding berms and moving loose soil around. The space has a tendency to undo itself when in use and needs tightening all the time. I have two of these and one of them needed tightening up so much that it would not come apart again without a spanner. That one now lives in the car and will be used for snow etc.

Initially I was delighted with the shovel, it was small compact, portable and seemed ideal, right up until I tried to use it, the retaining washer at the base of the blade buckled immediatley rendering the showel awkward to use, although this soon became a moot point as the moment I applied any pressure the blade bent as well. In my opinion you would be better off investing in a seaside bucket and spade, it would be about as durable and at least you would get a bucket into the deal.

I wanted a cheap folding shovel that i could keep in the boot of my car for any unforeseen situations. I wasn't expecting much at this price, but thought i'd take a chance and preferred the fact its made out of metal vs plastic handles, came with a storage bag etc. Overall its a good cheap shovel, its better quality than I expected and has been used for light tasks such as snow and sand. Anyone expecting a cheap folding shovel to stand up to heavy duty day to day tasks should look elsewhere and buy an appropriate tool for the job, however if you just want a useful bit of kit to store easily for occasional use - cant really go wrong with this shovel.

Good in the beginning, but got rusty and unusable very very fast.

Great product. Bought this after a week with grandchildren on a seaside holiday. Got fed up of trying to build sandcastles with a cheap plastic spade. This product is very sturdy and folds very small. It comes with a very good canvas carry bag. Very pleased, no complaints. I keep it in the car boot as it may be very useful if we get heavy snow.

Mi sembra un attrezzo pratico e robusto. Occupa poco spazio, un po' pesante ma d'altronde è una pala, forse il passante per la cintura mi sembra un po' troppo esile. La verniciatura, con l'uso, si consuma ma non è un difetto grave.

Se ve robusta, metálica, el plástico juega un papel mínimo en el producto. Funda sencilla, de calidad cuestionable, pero al fin y al cabo cumple su función. La pala se plega disminuyendo el tamaño un 66% respecto a la pala desplegada. No creo que sea para ponerse a cavar una piscina, pero la veo perfecta para llevar en el coche en zonas de nieve (para eso la quiero yo). El mango en si se ve confortable, cruzado perpendicularmente que le da un punch de comodidad para pegar paladas a baja altura. En la pala, hay un filo dentado que difícilmente cortaría madera, pero sin embargo “mellaría” el hielo sin problemas. 5* por la rapidez del envío, el precio imbatible de mercado y su aparente funcionalidad. Si resulta que la necesito y me falla, editaré la reseña sin piedad!
