Working with Apple TV 4th generation
Having the new 4th generation Apple TV (which only has one HDMI carrying all AV outputs) and an old Panasonic 2009 plasma TV (HDMI in and stereo optical audio out) and even older Denon AVR (DD/DTS/stereo optical and co-ax audio in) I need a device that splits out the digital audio from the HDMI like the previous Apple TVs did. What attracted me to the Neet device vs others is the co-ax digital connection as I have a spare one on the Denon whilst all the optical ports have been used up.I particularly wanted to have Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio and this Neet audio converter nicely provides that. When switched to 'mode A' the TV dictates the audio track (if there is a stereo and surround track in the movie file) that the Apple TV uses ... my TV forces the Apple TV to use the stereo track and so the best that the Denon can do is process it into Dolby ProLogic II. With the Neet switched to 'mode B' the Apple TV will select the surround track (if there is one) and the Denon will process this correctly as a 5.1 signal. The only downside (and this is due to the HDMI sending only one type of audio signal) is that when the surround track is used there will be no audio from the TV speakers, i.e. the Denon must be used, and so I need to retrain the family to switch on the Denon AVR and click the right audio input source when watching movies. This isn't so difficult as we use a programmable Logitech Harmony One remote control. The switch on the Neet box is quite small and, while switching A/B modes works well to change the audio track being used even during playback, I don't want to have the kids stress-testing it.4 stars for two reasons: it would be nice if all cables where on the back and the switch was bigger on the front; I've only had the device for a few days so cannot say how reliable it is and it's not cheap (compared to the others).

If you are looking to extract audio from HDMI, this is the device to go with
After being intrigued by an interesting link concerning a Chromecast paired with a VGA converter that had AUX out in an attempt to connect the Chromecast to any 3.5mm speaker, I decided to investigate. As I am subscribed to Google Music the ability to connect my Chromecast to any 3.5mm speaker made a lot of sense, as I could take advantage of the streaming service without constantly having the TV on. I read reviews on the 'VGA solution' but the seemingly recurring message was that the DAC in the £10 device was very very poor - as music was main concern this seemed a waste of money. As I had a spare FiiO Taishan DAC laying about I decided to look for a device that was capable of separating digital audio from the Chromecasts HDMI and let the dedicated FiiO DAC do the conversion. Having used Neet before and been impressed with the price/performance I decided to go with them once again and am I glad I did!Pros:Easy to setup, literally plug and playDedicated switch for allowing maximum compatibility (Position 1 - allows the HDMI source to handshake with the receiver, thus communicating the most compatible audio format, usually 2.0 pcm, which is then split by the Neet device. Position 2 - Manipulates the handshake so that particular audio formats such as 5.1 dolby, dts, etc are forced)Coaxial, Optical and 3.5mm Aux out!Comes with an RCA to 3.5mm cable and power supplyHDMI video signal is not affectedWhilst brief and not written in stellar English, the manual provided helps to set things up quite easilyCons:At £33, it is slightly expensiveVerdict:I have had this device up and running for a month and it has performed flawlessly. The audio out is superb and has given my Chromecast a new place and use in my house. I would absolutely recommend this product

sends video fine just no audio
Splits the signal from my Chrome/Kodi box's HDMI out and send the full audio pass-through (DTS-HD/True HD) to my SR6005 via HDMI, and also sends a stereo signal to my NR7004 via the digital coaxial, and to my Sennheiser RS 170 headphones via the 3.5" stereo jack.Would have gotten 5 stars had it not been for one flaw, every time i go to use this to watch movies through my SR6005 amp via the HDMI, the unit needs powered on and off before it will send the audio, sends video fine just no audio, but once the power is cycled whilst the TV, AV amp and kodi box are all turned on, it sends the audio fine, turn and of the other devices off and on, or switch the AV input on the amp and it drops the audio again and needs power cycled again, this happens with all audio, not just protected types.

Neet HDMI audion converted - now I have 5.1 surround sound again
I purchased a Denon Blu-Ray player to replace my faulty existing Denon DVD player which I ordered from a Hi-Fi / AV specialist. Unfortunately, the new Blu-Ray player only has HDMI outputs and would not connect to my existing Denon AV Amp which uses Coax or optical which (wrongly) I assumed would be available on the new Denon and which the AV shop failed to warn me about. I had an excellent picture but no surround sound only 2 channel stereo. I saw this unit on from Amazons recommendations when I logged on, purchased it and it has fully rectified the problem of no surround sound from my Blu-Ray player. The setup is that I use HDMI from the Blu-Ray player which plugs into the HDMI IN connector on the unit and then HDMI out to the TV. I then use the Coax connector from the unit to my AV Amp for 5.1 surround sound. I now have excellent picture quality and 5.1 surround sound (Dolby or DTS) depending on the source. The unit is mains powered, not a problem. Both my Blu-Ray player are 3D and so is the unit but I could not test this out as my TV is not 3D or 4k. This unit has saved me from having to purchase a new AV amp with all the time required to setup the speakers etc, it's a pity my Denon player didn't have this functionality in the first place, thank goodness for this unit.
