Q: When it says "wireless" I hope the connection from the receiver to the speakers was wireless - I am dreaming?

Speakers are all wired . Wireless is for internet conection

Q: As all the speakers are wired, how long are the wires? Long enough for the rear speakers to go round the side of a living area and behind a sofa?

Hi all the wires except the base speaker are around 4 - 5ft max I've had to have all speker facing the front still get partial so round sound

Q: are the speakers wireless can you play cd's

No they are not wireless & yes playing CDs sounds fantastic, you won't play them on your stereo again once you hear how good music sounds

Q: How quiet is the fan? (I've just had to return a system because the fan noise was so obtrusive)

Mine has no discernible fan noise at normal listening/viewing distance, even when the room is totally silent. Even with my ear only a couple of inches from the fascia there is only a very low level gentle hum if I strain to hear it. In short, the noise level is in the region of a mouse's breathing.
