This actually works
When you search 'air purifier' on amazon you will see a wide range of cheaper products. Most if not all will come with a HEPA filter - the all important specialist filters that can remove microscopic particles from the air.The problem with most of the cheaper models is that they either dont specify a CADR rating on their ability to remove dust and pollen etc, or they have a low rating - rendering them useless for all but small sealed bedroom use. This Vax model comes with a CADR rating and its one of the highest of any of the models available to date across all fields (pollen, dust). It is also suitable for large spaces - 120ms - which is practically a whole house. One thing to note though is that the high CADR rating will presumably have been measured with the unit on 'high' mode - which is 'very' noisy. This may be fine if you position the unit in a part of your home where the noise will not be as intrusive - in theory as long as your windows are closed and internal doors open it will still recirculate the air in your home, as its powerful enough. The alternative for those who want to use this overnight in bedrooms is to close your bedroom door and window and have this on low mode (there is a night mode but the air flow is so low i question whether this actually does anything). Low mode is quiet enough to sleep yet still effective in an enclosed room.I have this in my kitchen, with the ioniser function enabled. I have a cat and find using this regularly (as in few hours a day) on auto mode keeps the dust and cat hair levels from the air down (you can see it when a beam of sunlight comes through the window - there is a noticeable difference in bits floating in the air). The filters on this model are ridiculously expensive though. Vax really should fix this as their main competitor (e.g. philips) filters are cheaper. So all in all I would recommend this model if you want a reasonably priced unit which actually works. Beware the cheaper models on amazon and always check the CADR rating and room space they're designed for vs the use you want it for in your home.

A very efficient hepa filter unit
I bought this VAX HEPA filter unit cheaper from Amazon warehouse. It came in its original box but sadly it was minus the remote control and user manual. This is not a problem however because the unit is very easy to use. The unit has a very large HEPA filter in the base, and a very powerful fan to pull air through the filter. The unit is silent in operation unless the higher two speeds are selected, in which case it becomes very noisy but also very powerful.Normally it is just left in automatic mode, so that when it detects a high level of airborne contaminants the unit reacts to this and automatically Increases the fan speed.I am very happy with my purchase and would thoroughly recommend. This was a “Which?” Best Buy a few years ago, but now “Which?” say that there are better units on the market. The VAX unit is a must for allergy sufferers.

Great for homes with pets
Two cats that get fur everywhere - this thing is powerful enough to make a difference day-to-day! It works incredibly well, the automatic adjustment to meet the air quality is great and really helps the place feeling fresh. Only negatives: filters aren't cheap, it's loud on the higher settings and it is bigger than one might expect. Overall, impressed!

Excellent
Bought this beast after the dust from our never ending building work started to get seriously out of hand and was making us ill. We positioned it in the hallway next to the stairwells and, after just a couple of hours, could feel the air improving all over the house. We had our first proper night's sleep for weeks, with no coughing and less wheezing from me and no sniffing or sneezing from the other half. We already have a smaller Vax AP02 in the bedroom and a mini Vax AP01 in the caravan which help me manage my asthma very effectively and I rate both very highly, but we needed something bigger for the rest of the house and the Pure Air 300 is in a different league - simply amazing. It is so quiet, compared to the smaller models and, on night mode, it just whispers, making it easy to ignore and sleep through. I love the way it responds to changing air conditions - every time it detects a wave of dust, or the toxic smoke seeping in from our neighbour's woodburner, it revs up and clears the air in minutes. When the soil pipe was being cut in our bathroom, it eliminated the odour immediately. One small downside is that the dog is getting a complex, as the machine revs up every time she walks past it, however, it has certainly driven the message home to my other half about how much dust he has been carrying around on his DIY clothes. This machine takes up a bit of space as you need to keep a margin around it for it to work properly but it is not unattractive and has serious capacity. Great for large, open plan areas. Very pleased with this purchase and the delivery was very quick and efficient.

Very effective particulate filter
Bought this on the strength of a Which? review, plus others' comments. I don't find it excessively noisy, even on the highest setting, although you certainly know it's running then. At the lowest levels it's almost silent. The sensor is located at the back of the machine, and air intakes are front and back, so sometimes it's not as quick to ramp up if the dust etc. is directional from the front. If left on auto in a dusty atmosphere, or where there's a draft, it can ramp up and down quite frequently - I tend just to put it on the middle setting if this happens. It clears particulates (e.g. smoke) very quickly and effectively, but it won't work on cooking smells - or rather, it will remove the smoke but vaporised cooking oil can taint the filter (so you get the smell of cooking next time you use it!) The only real drawback I've found with the unit is that it is very light and easy to knock over, being fairly tall - I wouldn't use this unsupervised where there are young children or pets.
