Corel 5 star customer support--1 star on conversion utility!
I really wish I could do two different ratings. Because if you are a brand new user and do not have decades of documents then Corel Wordperfect Office is the best and easiest product of all and beats its competition. The problem with this product for me is that I have about 25 years worth of documents to convert from Microsoft to Corel. I called and emailed Corel before I made the change. I explained to them my issue that this was a big deal for my company, I assured them that I am switching over regardless. I needed to know about the conversions because of staffing issues and the like. Because if I could convert documents from Microsoft from within Corel then I was good. You know, no need to hire temporaries to go through 200,000 files and convert them from within Microsoft. But, I was assured that all would convert. Word, Excel, Powerpoint. So, we tested a couple of documents for the process and found that the conversion was very messy and really was no conversion at all.Don't do this! But, I went ahead and ended my relationship with Microsoft removing the software from ALL of our servers. We left the stand alone versions on various PCs around the office no problem there. But, when we went to convert Powerpoint to Presentations X8, well what a Holy mess. We decided to halt the conversion process until I could figure a solution. I found none. But the straw the broke the camel's back, is when we found that newly created presentation x8 could not be saved in to Powerpoint. Most people do not have the extreme situation that I have. But, I recommend that unless you have a big IT budget to stay in the bad marriage with Microsoft :(.For Technology DirectorsThis is for Technology Directors like myself with big IT budgets, if you are going to convert from office to Corel you will need to hire FTEs! It takes 1 FTE per month to properly convert about 5,000 documents to Corel. You want to do the conversions now from within Microsoft to Corel. I know this is expensive, however it you look at the ledger for the amount of money you have to pay for upgrades of unsupported products or subscriptions, in about 5 years depending your size you will recoup your investment in Corel. So, I had to hire a bank of FTEs. After you are done with conversion, keep hold your best converter permanent. You will need her expertise for at least a year.I gave Corel a 5 because it is a solid product, I like that Corel continually supports the product despite version number. Which is why I left Microsoft. But, I gave Corel 1 on conversions!I hope this helps.

Difficult transition, great product
I distrust Microsoft. In the late 1990's, a co-worker and I watched network traffic between the company's computers and what we found out later to be Microsoft servers. This was over the old dial-up, metered connections. As a consequence, I've been looking for a solid replacement office suite for some time.I have been using LibreOffice/OpenOffice and this has been a difficult transition. I like the WordPerfect, having had used it when it required a keyboard overlay; however, it's been a long time since I used it and I'm not used to the control it gives the user over LibreOffice and Microsoft Office. This single biggest complaint I have with this product is that it is marginally compatible with Microsoft Office, which everybody seems to use. For example, I have several forms created in MS .doc format and have tried to work on them through WordPerfect; however, every single time I open the document, the formatting has changed. In one instance, I sent a form to one of my clients and the bullet list had changed to money signs. That's highly unacceptable and sent the wrong message.I've since recreated the form in WordPerfect's proprietary format, .wpd, and it looks fine. I'll most likely have to either convert it to PDF and hope that the client doesn't need to make changes, or work with it on LibreOffice. This would be an easy decision if all software worked well together; but, they don't. I've had to keep LibreOffice installed to work with the .doc and .docx files; this has lead me to question why I have both of them installed. I have been dealing with LibreOffice's shortcomings for awhile and I can, at the very least, work on the MS-formatted documents and know that they will work, most of the time. The rest of the office suite is working well and I have not had a problem with Quattro Pro at all.

MS Word Import is a Cruel Joke
Buyer beware: despite the claims, this DOES NOT properly import MS Word files, nor does it properly convert to MS Word. When you import files from Word, extra spaces and characters are added and extra font features are added (such as bold text). Some of the things, like the extra spaces, could not be remedied and I got no support for the issue from Corel. I was really hoping to get away from MS, but this product was in no way a viable solution. You also can't directly save as a PDF, instead you have to print to PDF, and the PDF import feature is terrible (with the same issues as Word import). It was returned for a full refund.

OK but not much improved
Not much different than X6 which I've been using.

WordPerfect -- still the best, still far from "perfect", still the same glitches, but largely unchanged from earlier versions.
As a user of WordPerfect for over twenty years, I see practically no difference between version x5 and x8. The ebook conversion basically sucks, and after two tries at downloading it's still missing parts it should have. Customer service on tech questions is still dismal, but slightly better than totally dismal on earlier versions. At least you now get an semi-useless email answer, but don't hope for ever getting a live person. I see nothing new on reveal codes. I know this is supposed to be an improvement -- but what that is -- totally eludes me. Likewise, it will still drive you nuts at times doing things it shouldn't. Pdf conversion is just OK, but works for most things. However, if I need pdf editing, then buying a month on Adobe for their professional version for $14.99 is well worth the price. However, since I also know Word -- WordPerfect is still superior for creating documents. It's just that a new version should really offer MUCH MORE than this one. This is an update and warning: Just as an update, I removed X8 today and reinstalled X5 because even spell check wasn't working. When I did, it wiped all the X8 files -- totally. They just disappeared. Not sure if I can retrieve them if I reinstall X8 and run the versions side by side. But a real warning: if you go back to an older version you may lose all your files created in X8.
