Very small but the very best customer service
What you receive is a 3x3 piece of plaster shaped like a shark. I have bought many of these excavation kits. My kid loves these things. He did get some cool shark teeth from this product but, they were all in the same spot. Once he "found" one, the others were literally directly below it. So, I believe the price point is a bit high for what it is.Update: I contacted the company and they basically overnighted a new kit to me. My kid tried again and it was a lot better this time so, maybe the first one was a bad quality one off? Anyway, I have upgraded the rating because there simply aren't enough companies out there who care enough about their customers experience with their products. Blue marble is awesome. I will purchase their products again and you should as well.

Gift
My granddaughter loved it

Tiny
The piece to dig is super tiny. My daughter enjoyed it though, as she loves sharks. She was disappointed because all of the teeth were right next to each other instead of digging and “searching”

Beware. You can either get a good set, or a bad set.
EDIT TO ADD: I contacted National Geographic customer service in regards to the broken teeth from my kit. They were very understanding and offered to send me a set of replacement teeth. I gladly accepted and I’m very thankful for their cooperation! I have updated my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars due to their help.••I purchased 2 kits for Christmas. One for my son, and one for myself. I love all things sharks and thought it would be a really fun experience with my child. Both kits arrived at the same time and were opened and used at the same time. My son and his father chiseled away at his and came out with the top 3 teeth - they look amazing! Mine, however (bottom row), majority of my teeth were broken as I found them, and no where close in comparison to the size of the teeth from my sons. I actually ended up putting all my clay into a bucket of water just to disintegrate the clay and try to find all the pieces to my teeth to hopefully glue them back together. All I could find was one piece for the middle tooth. I’m super disappointed in my kit, but glad my son actually came out with a better set in the end. I wouldn’t purchase any more of these just because there’s no guarantee you’ll end up with hole teeth or just pieces.

Excellent Digging Bug Fun!
This was a favorite of my almost 5 year old son. He loves insects or all kinds and arachnids. We were not sure what to expect so important stuff to know:* There is a scorpion painted on the dirt/sand piece you get, this is not an actual scorpion.* If your kids are a little more eager to dig faster they will not destroy a specimen.* I put the block we were digging on a small cookie sheet (jelly roll pan - it has about 1 inch lip around it). This was perfect for containing our mess.* The specimens are real and are enclosed in a clear acrylic like a small rock. Each bug is in its own clear rock.* Specimens are small but you get a magnifying glass with this as well as the digging tool and brush.* Specimens are excellent quality, the size of them is great because my son can easily put these in his pocket and take with him to show his friends when we are out.He is ready to dig another one and I am going to see if I can find one with different specimens for variety but truthfully he would be just as happy with the exact same ones. He loved this! I did too!

Wish it would have had more
My son was very excited about this gift. He is 8 and he got through this very fast. For the price just wish it was a little more challenging with better product inside.

Good entertainment
Good product for a keen little archaeologist. Was over and done with in 10 minutes and I don't feel that justifies the price but it is well put together and you do get some fossils. Does make quite a mess so make sure it's dug outside or on a sheet etc

Great kit!
My son loved the excavating experience, and he was over the moon to find 3 shark teeth 2 of which were from sharks that have gone extinct (and one being an old ancestor of the megladon!). The excavating block is on the smaller size, but it was perfect for my 6yo. It took him about an hour to excavate all 3, and he spent two hours looking at his finds in awe. Very special indeed!!

Perfect gift idea to capture imagination!
Don’t normally write in depth reviews of things but was a bit hesitant buying this not being sure what to expect but my bought for my boys 6th birthday and he loves both sharks and fossils, rocks, gems etc so this seemed like a perfect combination. The tools were easy for him to use to dig in, we had to add a bit of water occasionally to help break the block up easier but even for his small hands he was managing to dig through ok. I would say smaller children need a bit more help to get through the painted surface of the brick but once they grasp scraping at the surface of the brick it is pretty easy to dig through. It took us about 20 minutes to get to the teeth in the middle and they were all bunched together which was a shame but really that nitpicking, even once found them it took a bit of time dig round them and brush them off to free them safely. We used a little medicine syringe to apply water where needed and found that worked brilliantly to help keep the mess down too.The specimens revealed are brilliant quality little teeth, with a nice bit of info about them in the book with the set. My lad is absolutely amazed by them and has had to ring all the grandparents to tell them about it, he’s learned the names of the sharks and all about each one as it’s really captured his enthusiasm and excitement for fossils.I can’t recommend it enough if your child is interested in this sort of thing, the immersive action of actively digging and excavating the specimens themselves seemed to make him far more in love with them than just ones he’s bought in gift shops etc too.Only advice I would offer is prepare to take your time digging as they look very easy to accidentally break one or even miss them altogether and use a small amount of water when needed. The brick is like a fine clay and the water cleans the teeth off quickly and nicely too, as mentioned I used a little calpol syringe and that was perfect not to get it everywhere of make a mess of it.I will be picking up more of these sets for him from national geographic for definite as he has thoroughly loved this one and I loved the father son time seeing him so excited! Best smiles for pound present I have ever got him!
