Saundarya Lahari : Wave of Beauty

Indeed renders the esoteric immediate and the distant near :)
I had pre-ordered the book after coming across Mani Rao's work and did know what to expect. I am completely delighted by what landed on my hands this morning.Saundarya Lahiri is one among thousands of works from the Indian subcontinent relating to the idea of self-realisation thorugh the divine. Many of these works, either in Sankrit or other regional Indian languages, have many translations. Most translations, in my limited experience, discuss little the body of work or other contextual underpinnings and dive right into the writer's version of the translation. Such is not the case with Mani Rao's Saundarya Lahiri. The introduction is sharp, articulate, and presents the ideas concisely. The author has touched upon not only the origins of this body of work but also treads upon etymology and poetic structure. What is especially commendable is the inclusion of the socio-political context under which Saundary Lahiri has been composed and transmitted; this is immensely important because it gives the reader space in which they can place their own meanings and understanding. I believe we are at a time in history where centuries-old works have to definitely carry the social and political climates of thier creators and propoents. This evolution in the art of interpretation is exalted in action in Saundarya Lahiri.Very few commentaries and tranlations evoke a sense of respect and curiosity for the original body of work. Kudos to the author and looking forward to more.

Just single line meanings
Detailed meaning or explanation absent for a 216 pages book. Single line meaning given. Print too small. Lots of empty spaces in each page. Could have been printed in 30 to 40 pages for the content. No return possible. All show, no substance.
