For the birds to use it here in Georgia (other than the goldfinches, which had no problem with the low height) had to use a couple of rubber bands to raise the guard about three inches. Now all the larger birds are getting used to using this feeder. At this height the guard still works well to keep the seed dry when it rains. So yes, with a minor modification that takes only a couple minutes it does exactly what it is designed to do.
