The Life of Richard Wagner (4 Volumes) : 1813-1848, 1848-1860, 1859-1866, and 1866-1883 Hardcover – January 1, 1966

I read Newman's Wagner biography many years ago but took it out from the library. I assumed it would always be in print so I could buy a copy whenever I wanted to. Unfortunately, it went out of print for many years, until recently. Now that it's back, I grabbed the opportunity to order it. It's indispensable for all Wagnerites. The detail with which Newman covers every aspect of his subject is unparalleled, and the quality of his writing is consistently high. My only reservation is that, since the book was written in the 1930's and 1940's, some newer information has come out. It doesn't invalidate Newman's conclusions, but it is advisable to also read one of the newer biographies, such as Millington's, to get an idea of current Wagner scholarship. Nonetheless, no current book can quite equal what Newman did--it's still the standard work.

Volumes I received where not the same as those advertised. Received library books with hand drawn titles, instead of volumes advertised.

I was ecstatic when I opened the box. Beautiful copies of the books and book jackets included.
