Just right for what we needed
These were perfect for a Valentine's gift we made for our nature school kids. We put together a little survival pouch to attach to their backpacks that included these, some fire starting materials, a mini knot tying booklet and some Paracord. We had to put together close to 60 pouches so the cost was just right. They are a great size to always have in your backpack or first aid kit and work with any metal knife blade. It takes a couple strikes to get the top coat of black off but then they easily make sparks.

These are great for an easy to carry backup.
These small ferro rods are easily packed or carried in a wallet. I got them to fit in a DPx knife handle that has a hidden space. The rods are small, but used wisely will last a bunch of fires. Don't plan on these being a primary ignition source, but they are handy and they work.

Better than ferro rods 10x as expensive
Bought these on a whim. Recently purchased smaller ferro rods from a company selling 1 3/8"x3" for $30 shipped, and these were touted as some of the best made. Figured for $12 for 5, I'd see how these compared. I was pretty surprised to say the least. These are easier to strike, and I get sparks with a light flick. These throw a lot of sparks, more flaming sparks and caught my jute easier and with more regularity than the ferro rod 10x as expensive. I am astounded that I have (5) 3/8"x3" rods for $12 shipped and i was going to waste $30 on 1 that wasn't better in the least. Buy these, you wont be disappointed if they ship you what they shipped me,

Small enough to tuck in anywhere
Not my mainline service sparking choice but THESE can be secured without noticing on keychains, knife sheaths, and zipper-pulls for those "just in case" moments. On a knife sheath I like to encase these tiny fero-rods in a rubber or plastic tube, folded and tied closed before securing on an exposed sheath.I make a point to, after returning home from an outdoors adventure, re-paint all Ferro-rods with clear fingernail polish.**The Whole Point ** of a ferro-cerium rod is that it is extremely reactive. Water, especially salty water, sweat, and oils from your skin will degrade these most reactive tools. When you need one -- you NEED one. Make certain it it usable -- just in case.

It's effective!
I purchased these small/mini fero rods to place in a lightweight get home bag also in my wazoo cache belt and cache cap. I was a little worried that being so thin that they might break easily but I found them to be sturdy. I tested one on a Bigfoot bushcraft fire plug using the tiny victronox classic and it worked like a charm. 2 strikes and I had fire. I would buy it again however they come in 20 per package so they will probably last long after I'm gone. Also a great gift idea for those that enjoy the outdoors

Take your time.
You gotta scratch on them for a while to gouge out a flat spot. From there, it's fireworks. Literally. Lot's o' magnesium in these little guys. You could get several hundred fires out of each. I glued one into the crease of my wallet. Can't even tell that it's there. The starter went out on my grill and these work better than a lighter. I was doubtful when I saw how small they really are, but forget all that. They work great and I highly recommend. Be well. Keep it simple.

3 inches is a little short with no handle
I got these to use as awards for Scouts passing my fire-building class. Mine arrived dirty and beaten-up-looking compared with others. Not used, but not in good, uniform shape. I feel like 3 inches is too short for serious use. Four inches with a handle makes more sense to me, although the ones I use the most are six inches long and half an inch diameter. If these were drilled for a lanyard, they might be okay with the lanyard held taut as an extension of the rod like a "handle".Anyhow - unless you're gluing or threading and screwing these into a handle, I'd say look for something s bit longer. Oh, and good luck cutting a thread into these!
