Q: how warm is this material? Is it breathable? Can it be used for masks in the hot desert?

medium dense and fairly tight weave. Not bad for breath-ability, But, it would work best if it was the only layer or if inside layer was a Very breathable, thin, looser weave cotton. It's a good quality quilting material. I don't understand the question, "how warm is it". As far as quilting fabric goes, it's higher quality with a close weave. I have used it for masks with a soft thinner muslin for the inner layer.
