Fantastic!
A well thought out book that details how England became the England we know. It starts from times long ago and comes close to our current history. Well worth the read.

However it is really wordy and tedious to read
Really helpful information, I got this for one of my classes. However it is really wordy and tedious to read. I had to read the content twice really carefully to truly understand.

Great for Beginners...
For those that are vague on Englands history in the first place, this is a great book to begin with.

A Kingly Text
I really enjoy this text. I would never normally buy a textbook like this, but I had to for a class. The text is easy to read, interesting, and very informative. It is a great addition to any medieval nerd's library.

A great book on Saxon England, one of a series of 4 which cover pre Roman England to modern day UK.
A great book in a great condition, very gently used which is just how I love used books to be. There are some highlighted bits, but they are minimal and not too intrusive. I have seen much worse highlighting and other related things such as underlining, marking and copious notes in margins (seen especially in library books, but not limited to them). That is something I do not like to see in books, as it makes reading them difficult and frustrating, to impossible. Whoever owned and used this book before, was very gentle with it, and did not overdo the highlighting - there's not a lot of it, and the yellow is mild and unintrusive. The reason I got interested in this book is that I when studied British history in university, the 2nd book of this series of four - This realm of England 1399 - 1688, was one of my texts. It was a great read, I couldn't put it down! And it had lots of interesting details which I greatly enjoyed. Recently, I was delighted to discover that this is actually a series of four great books, which span England's history from the making of England, i.e. its beginning, all the way to modern times. Now, Saxon England, and particularly king Alfred the Great and his time, is of great interest to me, and has been for a long time. And I was even more delighted to discover that the first book in this series deals with it. I have looked through this book (I will start reading it properly soon), and it's written in the same captivating, delightful way at the second vol, which I have greatly enjoyed, and highly recommend. Just like vol 2 did for 1399 - 1688, this book looks at Saxon England in great detail, and from deferent angles/perspectives, such as social, cultural, monarchic, religious and more. Interestingly enough, this book is the 8th edition, just like my original text - vol 2. It's a great book I'll be enjoying for along time! ;-)I love these books as history books, not necessarily as textbooks. I do not know whether or not they have been written specifically as textbooks for university students/students, but for anyone interested in English/British history they would be a joy to read.
