How do you add a trap to this? In a low profile situation?

I had to place the trap a foot or two away from the drain fixture, where I had some working room. It was a tight fit, but it worked. I looked on line and they have what they call an in-line flap trap. The trap is linear with a flapper that opens to let water out, but closes to keep sewer gas from coming back up the drain. Here is one from Oatey available at the Home Depot: "Help prevent sewer gas from entering your home while you vent your drain line with this Oatey ABS PTC In-Line Round Trap Bend Cheater Vent. Easy to handle. Oatey 1-1/2 in. ABS PTC In-Line Round Trap Bend Cheater Vent-39012 - The Home Depot Brand: Oatey Availability: In stock Price: $6.73" Google "in line flap trap" to see some pictures. Hope this helps.....

Does this drain contain a built-in P trap?

No, there is no trap attached to this.

How thick of a substrate can this drain cover. I have a 1" thick tub floor that I need to install the drain through. Will this work?

It has been awhile since I installed mine, I installed in a shower stall, if I remember right the threads were pretty deep, possibly an inch or better It worked great for my basement bathroom , so I did not have to bust concrete

Do you use plumbers putty or silicone to seal this drain? If not, what should I use

Plumbers putty is okay, but if installing on any type of acrylic use silicone only. A chemical reaction with putty and acrylic can lead to cracking.
