Works, but kind of kludgy
I had to put candle wax on the wooden tracks to make it work smoothly, and there is a noticeable increase in drag when the thread that pull the spider up becomes taught. Also, when holding it and the lid first slides back, but before the spider pops up, the spider is clearly visible inside the box. So while it does work, it won't be much of a surprise to anyone it is handed to. The prankster would have to be holding the box to surprise anyone else.

I had better
The media could not be loaded. I bought one of this at a store and I liked it so much I bought this one here so I could gift it to someone else. It was much smaller than I thought. Also the wood is too light that it can't completely open without pulling the entire box. On top of that somewhere it gets stuck and the surprise is gone. Too bad.
