Perfect for learning RFID, not so good for securing treasure.
Securing your gold and treasure...no. Working with your kids to play around with RFID, priceless. Have your kids make a "treasure box" or secure their tree house door...perfect. EASY to wire up. It works pretty good, but not for anything of real value. Bust the plastic base, then the circuit board tells a theif exactly which pins drive the door lock. SO, if you are using for a fun project, this is an excellent product and good value. HUGE educational potential.

Surprisingly Capable!
-- Rating Explanation --* This was eleven bucks at the time of purchase and I must say, I'm very happy with it. It's simple and works well. I had a few issues reprogramming an access code, but that may have been user error.* You really should use a relay (another ten bucks) to power this device and any external locks or mechanisms. I purchased a relay and, using a Leviton plug (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005KL8SXK/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2) with some basic wire, attached the relay to an outlet and the door RFID reader to the relay.* The instructions for this are really well translated (or maybe written in English firsthand, but I'm doubting it based on various errors). The diagram explaining the electronic setup is easy to read and understand, even if you're not fluent in wiring.*** (^caveat: this is meant to be a door-access system, so when I attached it to my garage wiring which just needed a quick pulse to open/halt/shut the garage door, I had to play with the wiring to understand how to wire it up properly to the relay and then subsequently to the garage door. Took me a bit. Also, in that scenario, change the open time from 3 seconds to 1 second, as if you "accidentally" start closing your garage door, you don't want to wait the default 3 seconds to enter the code once more in order to halt/open the door, especially if your puppy is enjoying the cool cement floor while basking in the sunlight directly underneath said door)* The read/write of the RFID tags works great; I haven't tried with other RFID tags that I own, but I imagine they'd work similarly. For eleven bucks, a couple of other components and some experimentation, this was well worth the price. I believe these are generic (there are dozens of alternative brands of the exact same product with their brand plastered on the front) but for this, it was worth it.BTW - it's $11 bucks and while it has a counter-security measure (an 'illegal access attempted' alarm for those trying to disable it) all it would take is an intruder to pull off the digipad from it's base and tap two wires together to open a door (or ring the bell, or send a signal... whatever).

Need some knowledge
It will help if you have some knowledge of keyless remote electronics. But anyone can get this from YouTube of online helpers. This is a good system, But put a kill line in the outside keypad so no one with the knowledge can override it and get in. A electrical kill switch is easy to do / just make the power wire so short/ it comes out as they try to put the keyless pad off the wall. Making it kill the hole system. That easy, but leave a key or wireless way to get in [hint hint] good luck.

DO NOT BUY! NOT AS ADVERTISED!
DO NOT BUY! What a freaking waste of money. What you see in the photo is NOT what you get. In fact, you'll be lucky if you get an operating manual, and if you do it will be in Chinese. Even then, when you scour the Internet and find some help on how to program the keypad, the instructions are based almost all on "press the star button and then do this..." BUT THERE iS NO STAR (asterisk) BUTTON key UNDER THE the Star graphic membrane!See my photo.

They work, some difficulties not anticipated. DO NOT BUY UNLESS YOU READ CHINESE
NOTE: THIS DESIGN KEEPS CHANGING. I have gotten three different designs, and none of them work exactly the same.My old review:They seem to work Ok. Some specific comments not addressed by other reviews:1. Do NOT use these to open a garage door with just a plain "normally open" connection. When you have a power failure, the initialization sequence will open your door automatically (or any other mechanism that responds to a momentary "on" signal). Every single time! I used the "doorbell" function built into the reader to add an additional manual control to prevent power failure opening. Of course, this means you must push an additional button to actuate the door, and be clever enough to wire it in series with the switching function of the reader. If you are using it to operate a magnetic door strike, it is unlikely that an intruder would be hanging onto the door in the brief moment that the rfid reader opens for just a moment.2. The keypad is damn near impossible to get off the mounting base, once you snap it on. There is a great risk of breaking the mount, so don't snap it on until you are sure you are done with it. Practice dismounting it before you screw it down.3. You cannot mount two of these close to each other, as occurs on both sides of a wall for controlled access from either direction. The radio transmissions interfere with each other, and the RFID recognition stops working. This can be overcome by shielding the readers with copper sheeting between them, but it is annoying that they have no internal shielding built in..4. As previously stated, their directions are clear [NOT ANYMORE!], but exceedingly cursory. If you cannot interpret directions that don't come with complete sentences, be prepared to search the internet for instructions. Even the wiring diagram is stupidly ambiguous. [PRETTY MUCH HAS NO WIRING DIAGRAM NOW]5. Several of the wire connections on the circuit board have no clear function, and the instructions do not even mention a purpose for them.6. There are many versions of these that look identical, but have different programming instructions and behavior. Information, reviews, and feedback that you read may not apply to what arrives with your order.EDIT 2019-10-15: I bought another one. The instructions are almost gibberish. Worst example: "7. mother Kajiaka: brush a management card 1.5 seconds back light flash quickly to increase the user card brush and then brush a management card to exit" These newest instructions make this RFID reader USELESS. Honestly, I believe they hired someone to edit the previous instructions so that they were worse than before. The device might work fine, but I do not believe that any English speaking person can even begin to interpret this, and I have installed 4 of these previously! The lables on the back of circuit board are considerably improved, but that isn't enough.I have reduced the star rating to just one star as a result. If the sellers want me to increase the star rating, then send me some usable instructions. If I can use the old instructions to operate the new RFID reader, I will let everyone know,

Some are winners, some are losers. Mine "mostly" works, but the instructions are SO BAD that it's almost impossible to understand the sequence for entering commands. Mine was defective after about an hour's use. Can't get a reply from the vendor and amazon says it's none returnable. Guess I'm the loser on this one - but I know better than to buy this cheap knock-off gear.
