Excellent instrument and more than accurate traditionally.
Through the years have found this to be the most stable measurement and it is affordable! This instrument replaced my old one and it was old. Works the same and is lighter to me feel wise(treat somewhat fragile). When I use it every few days take a baseline with sterile water. Then the seawater and extremely accurate like my old refractor meter. Used that 12-15 years. The added quality case is well made and added to it my backup hydrometer to compare here and there. All you need*****9/7/17***** Update > Mine is all over the place but salinity is not. Not sure what the heck is happening as the temperature is within 1 degree. Used another for over 10 years and never this variance May have to find a more expensive one now.

Works great until it rusts. Then its more difficult to get a reading.
The clear plastic thing that goes over the salt water has a metal pin as a hinge. When that pin rusts. The clear plastic thing will not move freely. So it will not lay flat on the other part. Good luck reading the salinity at this point, the thing must lay flat. I had to get that pin out, since it was rusted in that was difficult. I broke one side of the hinge getting it out but it works again, kind of. I sanded the pin and put it back. Like I said it only holds on one side now. So.. I bought another one. But I removed the pin right away. I sanded the pin down so when it does rust it will still have room to move.
