Solid build, clever design -- almost TOO clever
While building a simple DIY camera crane for my DSLR, I realized that I was going to need a couple of quick-release plates. Although I was going to default to a Manfrotto system, the positive reviews for this QR set from Giotto's caught my eye. And I'm glad it did!Although QR plates aren't exactly rocket science, it's clear that there was some actual thought put into the design of this product:* The plate locking knob is nice and decently sized. Although it seems like the knob won't turn with a large camera or DSLR attached to the plate, the knob can actually be repositioned by just pulling it out a bit while turning! Sadly, this clever -- but not very common -- design will frustrate users who aren't aware of it (see the negative reviews). I believe this was described on the packaging, but I can't remember.* The tool-free, low-profile thumbscrews (both 1/4 and 3/8 inch included) are a godsend. No more scrounging around for coins or unusually fat slotted screwdrivers to tighten or loosen your gear. They seem nicely made, too, with integrated rubber washers that help prevent slippage.* Spirit levels are always helpful, especially when you're installing a QR plate at the end of a long crane arm.Really, my only complaint would be that the textured powder-coated finish makes it slightly difficult to slide heavy gear (e.g., large crane or camera + rails) in and out. There's just too much friction to make the action smooth, but it's a pretty minor downside to an otherwise very useful and well-made product!

Fantastic Quick Release System
I've got about 7 of these quick release plates now, and I can't say enough about how great they are. Every time I get a new tripod, monopod, shoulder mount, or anything a camera can go on, I pick up another one of these. Having all of my stabilization methods united under one quick release plate makes switching cameras around a breeze. I like using a rail system on a tripod, but I recently purchased a tablet teleprompter system that also mounts on a tripod. The two won't work together, but I don't necessarily want them to. However, by slapping a QR plate to the top of my tripod and the bottom of both the rail system and teleprompter, I can quickly switch between the two. Of course, I have another QR plate on top of both the rail system and teleprompter to be able to switch cameras back and forth. The actual QR plate itself is of fantastic quality. It's all a fairly heavy-duty metal. I've had my oldest one for over 2 years and it still works great. It may have a few scratches and wear and tear, but that doesn't matter to me - it's still fully functional. Having the 2 leveling bubbles (one on the back and one on the side) is invaluable. Most tripods (and even some tripod heads) nowadays come with bubbles, but the closer the bubbles are to the actual camera, the more accurate they are. The QR plate also has two locking mechanisms - a lever to lock/unlock, and a button that must be pushed to remove the camera. This is a great "safety" feature and I'm sure has saved my cameras a number of times. A little bit of extra insurance is never a bad thing in this industry. The fact that the top and bottom of the QR plate can attach to either 3/8" or 1/4" (the two standard tripod screw sizes) is great too. I don't have to worry about getting adapters - the QR plate supports both. It even has little places on the sides to store your extra 1/4" or 3/8" (depending on which you use) screw so you won't lose them. The screws themselves also have little "handles" so you can tighten/loosen them without a screwdriver or coin, which is incredibly helpful. This is a great QR plate. I don't even hesitate to order one of these. $30 is a small price to pay for the flexibility this plate will provide.

Works great
I bought 2 of these and I would will be getting more.I use this on my 7D to go from my camera cage and rails to my Glidecam HD-2000. It slides in easy and locks down tight. The lever on the locking screw can be pulled out and repositioned. My only complaint is that the bottom of the receiving plate doesn't have enough grip when screwing it down to something. Unless you sink 2 screws into the unit you are mounting to, it can twist. I had to put little strips of rubber under the receiving plate to prevent it from slipping, and that had worked out great.I think this is a great alternative to the Manfrotto plate systems as it is just as strong and a good bit cheaper.

Well thought out and well made
I am using the Giottos camera mount to adapt an old MP3 copy camera for DSLR work. I had an adaptor made that screws on where the 4x5 camera came off. The Giottos screws onto the adaptor. I have purchased a couple of jib booms that came with the Giottos so I was familiar with this quick mount adaptor. When I saw that I could buy it alone from Amazon I was pleased. The first thing I noticed was that it came in a blister pack with very detailed instructions and exploded diagram on the reverse of the packaging card. I love that the blister pack came apart without a knife. Do you have any idea how many Americans visit the emergency room every year with injures from opening blister packs? It is in the thousands! The Giottos will mount to a male 1/4 stud or male or female 3/8. It comes with 1/4 & 3/8 camera mounting screws wich have D rings so that you can tighten the chuck to the camera without tools. The unused screw even has a storage spot on the side of the unit! The unit has 2 bubble levels. This is a quick release adaptor but it has a safety catch that you have to press (colored red) in addition to turning the knob 1/2 turn. This whole unit it brilliantly thought out and very well made. Highly recommended.

It's not easily breakable and the buble system works well
The product is simple to use. It's not easily breakable and the buble system works well! Glad I made that choice!

Excellent product, great quality, heavy duty, lots of cool extras and an absolute bargain
In my opinion this is a perfect product. Using it with a heavy DSLR mostly on a heavy duty camera slider this is a really well designed and crafted product. It slides on and off smoothly but always feels secure when it is fastened in. Great ideas such as two spirit levels and a screw tightener that doesn't require a penny which aren't essential but are excellent time savers and you will be very grateful for. Crafted from metal and rubber grips to stop it scratching your camera the level of quality is astounding for a product that is very cheap. An excellent product I will buy a second one for a backup.
