Superior 18V Drill! This is the one to buy folks!
I have been waiting for this drill to be available and I am so glad I waited for this model! After using this drill now for over 4 months I have to say, this is finest cordless drill I have used in the 18V Brushless line of drills! As always with Makita, the fit and finish is just outstanding! The build quality and overall ergonomics is way better than any other brand and feels so great in your hand! This drill has an all steel gear and drive housing for excellent strength and durability. It has an excellent ratcheting chuck with no bit wobble that I could tell what's so ever. These Makita chucks holds the bits extremely well and don't come loose at all. The brushless motor can put out some serious torque and seems to run forever on these lithium 2.0 batteries. I can tell this new brushless technology is a big improvement in power, weight, temperature, and run time! Overall, the Makita XFD12R is the best 18V drill on the market, hands down! I highly recommend this drill, you will not be disappointed!

Rugged, fast, and smart. My favorite drill/driver for under $100
After years of running a cheap 2.0AH 20v Black & Decker I finally decided to go with a Makita as I already run several of their brushless LXT tools. Both my mower and weed whacker uses the 36V dual system so I have a ton of batteries laying around. This was a no non-sense upgrade. What I did not expect us how much I was going to love using this tool. Yes, having batteries handy at the ready is a huge plus and why I stick with Makita but two features that stand out for me are the Torque-lock, where the speed of the tool remains constant and it self-adjusts Torque based on the desired setting. I'm able to keep my finger pressed on the trigger at the desired speed and if the screw I'm driving requires more torque the tool just does it for you. I don't have to press harder or risk stripping the head. I love that feature. The other is the two speed setting for when I need to unscrew stuff rapidly. The whole idea of buying a power tool is to make life easier than doing it by hand. For that job, this tool gets a solid 5 stars. It feels very well built, add the brushless motor and Makitas variable adjustment system and it would be very hard to beat this thing. The bonus is I get to only spend money on the tool and save money by not having to buy the charger and additional batteries. I love that about Makitas cordless fleet and I'm a customer for life.

Excellent drill, one issue
I'm on my second XFD12Z. No, not because it wore out and died, but because it was unfortunately stolen. When I got the first one, I was really eager to have it for a very long time like my dad's old 9.6v Ni-Cd Makita cordless drill from so many years ago. Regrettably I had to reset the clock. The drill is excellent. I intentionally got this model because it does not have the hammer function, and there's a lot of complaints about the hammer-drill model getting stuck in hammer mode. I don't drill concrete, I don't need a cordless hammer drill. I'll get a a rotary drill if I need to do that.I like this vs some of the other models because mainly the look - I like the aluminum "bulk head" between the motor housing and the chuck, where an aux. handle could be attached, though I use it without said handle. The drill is light, insanely zippy and has more torque than it needs. I've not compared it directly to my friend's Milwaukee that he uses to drill ice fishing holes, but I think this one would also be up to the task... pending confirmation! I'll try it next season. So why 4 stars? Within about a year of owning my first "copy" of this drill, the mechanism which locks the spindle when tightening and loosening the chuck began to give way, so rather than having that LOCKED feeling when chucking up a bit, you'd have to give it an extra spin to make up for the fact that it would not hold the shaft in a fixed position. That kinda kills the feeling of quality to me. Aside from that the drill continued to perform admirably up until the point that it walked away from my garage.Hopefully this one does not have this same issue; it's the ONLY thing I can think of to complain about for this drill. Excellent product.

LOVE IT
i have other makita tools and this is as good as they get. It uses the same battery as they others and is very long lasting , light in weight , and extreme strong drill.. extremely happy with this tool. As good as they get for a battery powered tool.

Makita is Great
Makita makes excellent tools. They do have a lower end line for the average user I suppose but I always choose the heaver duty tool line which this one is. I own three drills, mitre saw, nail guns, blowers, circular saws , sanders, polishing tools, all are Makita and none has ever failed and I 'm still using these tools, some for the last twelve years. I've tried other well known brands and some off brands they all have failed very soon and are trashed.

My go-to drill for most tasks
Although I use the XDT16 for most driver tasks, the XFD12 is up to that as well. Now it is largely sued as a drill and it excels at that. It has more than enough speed and power for most tasks. The chuck is a little odd. Sometimes it is a little finicky engaging or disengaging when installing a bit. It has not been enough of an issue to keep me from using it, and perhaps it is operator induced since it grips just fine.i also have the XFD13 which is a slightly milder version of this one that also gets a lot of use, more for non-impact driver duty, and the XPH07 for heavier work or where a bigger hammer drill is required.
