DK Illustrated Oxford Dictionary Hardcover – January 1, 1998

If you are looking for illustrated dictionary for adults, please go ahead and buy this one. Its a bargain for the quality and utility it has got for an adult looking to know more about different things.Its not an encyclopedia. It is not intended to be. It illustrated pictorially what a word means whenever possible. I want to know what a cathedral is I turn to Ca and find the word cathedral. I look at the picture and also notice what different parts are called.There are more than 4000 pictures. Other books boast of 2000 pictures but all they have are small pictures with very less information. But I dont like one thing. It doesnot have enough crossreferences. I guess they had to keep this book concise.certain words make sense only when u see the pictures. Compared to online dictionaries and encyclopedias I prefer this one as I can relax and browse this when I travel rather than carry a laptop around and strain my eyes seeing the LCD for hours.

The dictionary purchased is an excellent dictionary, profusely illustrated with exceptional color images. The inside back cover had a split in the paper, not too damaging to leave the book useful to me. The packing was much too flimsy for the heavy volume being shipped, leaving the cover a bit tattered. My only recommendation: use shipping envelopes or boxes heavy enough to carry the product.

This is a wonderful dictionary...I love all the pictures and explanations...my 9 year old opens it just to read it and check out the pictures and stuff...in a world where the web dominates, this dictionary is truly a good purchase.

This turned out to be one of the best dictionaries I have ever bought. I use it with my students 4th grade through high school. The definitions are easy to understand without being childish.

I wanted an illustrated dictionary and this one certainly met my expectations. I think it covers a very wide variety of words and definitions making it a good household reference.

The book is great. I bought this one for a five year old because he looks at mine each time he come over to my house. He is fasinated with the pictures. I use my book every day. I do cross word puzzles and the book is a wealth of information. I could not do without it. Dianne evans

What a tool! I would have given anything to own this when I was 12 years old. This is an excellent reference -- beautifully bound, loaded with color illustrations and diagrams, it just begs to be browsed and fondled. The only shortcoming is that there are no etymologies. (That's what cost it the fifth star here.) Word origins are often of interest to people who look things up, and I hope we'll see this addressed in the next edition. In the meantime, buy this one. There's no print dictionary like it!

I am sure you are familiar with the larger "unabridged" dictionaries. This book is about that size, however, it only has about 75,000 head words (plus their other forms). This is pretty good, but you might wonder why you would want to have such a large book with the number of words in a much smaller pocket dictionary. The answer is the 5,000 illustrations that provide a great deal of information. These illustrations are not decorative (although they do add color and beauty to the text), they are well chosen and provide many of the terms related to that object. This is a very enlightening book and acts almost as a one-volume encyclopedia, but these are definitions NOT articles.It is too bad that it is out of print, but very nice that good copies remain available on the used market at low prices.
