I bought this thermometer to take my temperature - will this do this? Reading the reviews it looks like a bought the wrong kind. Did I ?

YES IT WILL WORK:  This thermometer is a lab thermometer.  It is not the type people normally use to measure body temperature however, don't feel like you've wasted your money.  You can still use it to measure your temperature.  Here is what to do.  1. Wash/clean the thermometer along with your hands.  2. Immediately after washing, don't place it on any surface but, put the red bulb at the base under your tongue and close your mouth.  3.  Support the top end of the thermometer with your right hand to hold it up.  4. Keep your mouth closed for two minutes.  5.  Remove the thermometer from your mouth and quickly take a reading.  You must do this reading quickly because, as soon as the red bulb base hits the air, the temperature reading will start to drop.  There you go, try it yourself!  Normal body temperature is around 36 to 37 degrees celsius.  My temperature is 36.5 degrees celsius.

this thermometer says it is partial immersion, there is no line on the tube to show the immersion point.  how far should it be immersed?

The thermometer only needs to be immersed no deeper than the red bulb at the bottom of the instrument.  So for example:  If you're measuring the temperature of water, immerse only half the height of the red bulb into the water to get a reading.  The red bulb at the end is the only part that needs to be exposed to heat or cold that you're testing.

I just bought one put it in my mouth and it only goes up to 30 what am I doing wrong

Please note that this is NOT AN ORAL THERMOMETER.  This is a lab thermometer and is most appropriately used for checking the temperature in liquids.  If you want to check your own temperature, place the red bulb of the thermometer into your mouth underneath your tongue.  Use one hand to hold the other end up in case it is a bit heavy.  Wait 2 minutes.  Then pull the thermometer out and immediately check the reading.  Normal body temperature is 36-37 degrees Celsius.
