LOUISE NEVELSON: THE WAY I THINK IS COLLAGE
H**T
One of the 20th century's most unique artists
A little known corner of this major sculptor,s work is collage, or more properly, assemblage. These are wall pieces that employ cut and torn papers, yes, but also wood, wood veneer, sawn pieces, and her signature dark paints. In all of the medium, there is nothing like them. I suppose they are a rather dark joy. I feel a certain loneliness looking at them but they are ingenious, and go places in the psyche no one I can think of goes. The volume itself is a marvel of the bookmaking arts, reflecting Nevelson's particular slant on the world with it's use of blacks and browns throughout. The text is thoughtful and informative and places Nevelson in the context of this century's art, perfectly.
