Couldn't get enough~
Just checked this out of the library on a whim.. and my 6 year old, 10 year old and I read it about 5 times in a row, going back looking for clues in the pictures and enjoying the heck out of this story! We then pounced on their Dad when he got home and read it three more times, savoring it as much as the first time! Watching the story unfold, and how the ripple effects of seemingly innocent actions of the main character in the first chapter effect the remaining characters is stupendous, whether it's the first or fifteenth time we read it!I bought 10 copies for my 2nd grade class, and did sequencing, character, problem/solution, & cause/effect lessons with this one story! It is the best, and I fear that if I ever bumped into the author, David Macauly, I might have a "I'm your biggest fan" moment! As a 2nd grade teacher, and a very picky mother, I am often left underwhelmed by recent additions to the childrens' picture book market, preferring to stick to the classics (Virginia Lee Burton, the Frances stories, Madeline), but this story "Shortcut" is a delight each and every time we read it, I am sure that it will emerge as a classic and that I will see it on my grandchildren's bookshelves in (many) years to come!

Honk twice for a book that doesn't take a shortcut!
Honk! Honk! This is another great book by award winning author David Macaulay.Ever thought what would have happened if...? This is one of those stories - only better - because David goes into overdrive telling his hilarious story about how one action by one person changes the days and lives of many others. As is David's trademark, they story is of course very funny. It starts oh so innocently! Albert and his horse June are going to the market. On the way Albert cuts a line that is obstructing his way on the road. Well, that's when suddenly all mayhem let's loose and the day will take an unexpected and turbulent turn for various people and pets from then on. David takes us places where usually only kids can take you with their fantastic imagination - and it is a fantastic joyride all the way to the end. Surprise and laughter brought to life by brilliant illustrations of funny characters and animals. If you like this one, be sure to check out his other great kid stories like "Angelo" and "Black and White".

Go ahead and buy it
After you renew it from the library for the 11th or 12th week, it's time to buy the book. This is a non-stop hit around my house -- it travels everywhere in the car with us and is great for waiting in restaurants or while big brother has a practice. Every age enjoys this book. From the cast of characters, through the initial journey, by way of the unexpected detours, this book takes you the Long, LONG way to the happy ending. There is so much to go back and notice. Every time you read this book, the story becomes richer and more interesting. David Macaulay's illustrations are funny and clever and DETAILED. The animal characters resemble Doreen Cronin's (to a remarkable extent), and the story is pure pleasure.Buy it for your family. You will be so glad you did!

A repeat-favorite & short enough to read at bedtime.
A favorite for my young kids (5&7). They like all of Macaulay's books, but this one is short enough to read at bedtime. Repeat-reads are fun for the extra detail the kids pick up on.

My kids love it
As a fan of David Macaulay for many years - and of his earlier more "technical" books "How things work" - I had give this one a try. I also got "Why the Chicken Crossed the Road". They liked both. But of the two, the kids liked this one better - me too.

The pictures AND words matter
Storytelling where the pictures are if not as valuable as the words, more important is sometimes rare. This book is an exception: one needs to see both the words and pictures to really get a good idea of what is going on, which makes this book a good one for kids who may not be reading yet but who want to involve themselves in the understanding of the story as well. It also becomes a good book for kids to read once they are reading because of the interplay of words and pictures.
