More than Meets the Ear
Many of these old Motown recordings feature bass guitar session work by the now-famous James Jamerson. That's why I bought this box set. On the included _ABC_, you can hear his playing on at least the second half of the album, if not on the entire thing. He is for sure on the track, "Never Had a Dream Come True." If you look for this recording on YouTube, you'll find that you cannot play the whole track without interruption. You must buy the CD to hear it all. This box set is reasonably-enough priced for you to get _ABC_ plus a lot more. No one seems to know for sure which songs Jamerson performed on. Happy treasure hunting when you buy, and listen carefully throughout. You can't hear bass well on a tinny smartphone speaker. Please use earbuds. If you aspire to be a bass player, then good luck to you!

Rather more than you'll ever need
So here we have the Jackson Five's first five studio albums, individually packaged in badly-printed facsimiles of the original sleeves and jammed into a slip case. Frills are conspicuously absent. It's good value, though hardly a shining example of a budget reissue.Spread across the five albums you'll find some of the greatest pop records ever made (notably "I Want You Back"), and some forgotten gems ("Looking Through The Windows") and a lot of filler. These albums come from the time when Motown still saw itself as primarily a singles label and Marvin and Stevie hadn't won their their battles to make Proper Albums. So while there are moments of absolute brilliance, there are also yards of indifferently written, indifferently arranged and indifferently produced hackwork and a LOT of cover versions. The astonishing talent of the young Michael Jackson is evident, but even he can't do much with a lot of the turgid material he has to work with.If you're interested in the early J5, you're much better off going for a greatest hits set, especially as they're also likely to include some of Michael's early solo work: this set is of primarily historical interest, and listening to it, you'll end up wishing you WERE listening to a greatest hits set.Cheap, though!

A must-have bargain
Certainly the most economical way to get all of the first five albums of the Jackson 5. Miniature versions of the original album covers. I had "ABC" and "The Third Album" on vinyl LPs when they were new, and played side 1 (first six songs of CD) of "ABC" incessantly. 'Don't Know Why I Love You' is a stellar performance. Those six songs in particular are all great, singable and memorable, with some nice counter-melodies. Even the songs that weren't hits (on all the albums) are great. "Maybe Tomorrow" is the most spectacular performance by an 11-year-old anyone could ever expect. "ABC" choice line in '2 4 6 8', "I've got all the love a man can give, and maybe a little bit extra!"
