Not as good as the original
What prompted me to give such a high rating was the superb set design, but the original film is far better.

Authentic remake of a classic film
Guillermo del Toro has created a brilliant version of an old Holywood movie "The Geek", originally starring Tyrone Power. All the sets and costumes are meticulously authentic and the actors play their parts convincingly, particularly Cate Blanchett as a scheming shrink. The days of the carney are gone, but their spirit can be reawakened by inspired directors such as del Toro.

Another Re-make - Another disappointment
I bought the movie in hope of a different, but equally engaging experience that the 1947 original offered. But it didn't take long for the tedium of low-key lighting, murky imagery and mumbled dialog to cut in, despite the efforts of my new Sony smart TV to rise above this. I struggled to stay engaged with the film, and had I not spent ten quid on the DVD would have abandoned it. I found some of the acting a little clichéd and caricatured - Cate Blanchett's Lilith Ritter, for me, was something of a latter day Jessica Rabbit. And whilst Bradley Cooper returned a robust performance, he was, in my opinion, overshadowed by that of the charismatic Tyrone Power. I also found some of the scenes over-long.Much credit to director Guillermo del Toro. It must have been a very challenging project to re-make Nightmare Alley given the uncertainties of audience acceptance where re-makes are concerned. Del Toro's recreation of the era was, for me, superb as were the sets and interiors. And in fairness, he followed the story-line more accurately. Plus, relaxed censorship standards enabled him to more graphically portray the carnival sleaze that so fascinated author William Lindsay Gresham I'm sure that a great many people enjoyed the movie, but I suspect that those with mixed feelings, like me, are probably aficionados of the '47 original. It's hard to enjoy a movie remake when subconsciously one is constantly referencing back to the original.

Gripping - Intelligent - suspenseful
It`s along movie - too long for the cinema if you have a big soda - but for home viewing and that important pause button, stock up on drinks and snacks, take a P break at about 1 hour 45min, then watch to the end.. Enjoy.

Visually beautiful. Complex. Horrifying.
= Product info: Blu-ray (2022, Region free = This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. But having said that, I don’t believe I can ever watch it again. It is too good at what it set out to do: chronicle the complete & utter breakdown of one man.
