Swiss Army 1 Silver Alox

Pic is wrong on the Amazon thumbnail. It’s of a solo / single blade. This is a 4 blade tool. I borrowed my son's scout knife. I needed a can opener. I thought- “I want a Swiss Army Knife”. So I got the Electrician. I’ll explain. The Alox Electrician is an ideal pocket knife / multi tool. Only 2 sections thick, so it is thinner than you think. Disappears in pocket. My first SAK and first Alox I've ever held. Aluminum is extremely durable compared to plastic handle / scales on typical knives from Vic. Main blade is much thicker than normal SAK, very sturdy. It’s also on a bevel cut which you can see in the pics. Allows the bottle opener to be thick. BTW. the bottle opener is best I've used on a knife. Thick screwdriver, serves as a limited pry tool. Love the 90 degree lock on screwdriver. Wish all blades did that on knife (safety). Awl is very useful / tough blade. The awl is the best Amazon Box opener ever devised. Don’t ruin your good blades on tape. The aw is a rt angle stamped part for strength (pic). Sort of a lawn mower blade. Best blade is electrician. Short and handy sheep’s foot blade w a circular cut out to strip insulation. It takes the place of the can opener on the standard Pioneer/ original design. Makes the knife very unique. I’ll gladly give up can opener to have that every day. I'll use my son's can opener when I need one! Maybe I need a pioneer too. It becomes a problem. Nothing you don’t need. So easy to carry. Wish they made colors. This is the most practical knife of the series because of ease of carry and short blade. I’ve owned 2 as I lost one.

Forever, I believed that the last knife I would ever want or need would be a Victorinox SAK (Swiss Army Knife). I've gone through many different "phases" in my pocket knife-toting life, from slipjoint pocket knives to tactical, assisted-open knives. I've worked my way through all kinds of different steels from 1095 carbon, to S30V super stainless. When a co-worker and I got to talking about Victorinox, I immediately dismissed the entire brand. I thought I needed a "better" steel. I didn't want all of the "junk" that came with a standard SAK. Then I came across the Electrician. It has everything you need and nothing you don't. The combination of the sheepsfoot blade, reamer (or punch) and the silver alox scales are what originally drew me in. The more I thought about it, the more I HAD to have it, so I placed an order. 2 days later, it showed up on my doorstep and wow, was I impressed. It was perfect. The fit & finish are excellent and the size is just right. It's only about 7/16" thick and it really disappears into your pocket. The silver alox (as apposed to the standard red plastic) is nice and thin and I love that it looks different than a "normal" SAK. The main blade is just what you'd expect, but the sheepsfoot blade and the reamer are what really sets this little knife apart from the rest. The 420HC stainless steel that Victorinox uses is really good enough for anyone. I use my DMT diamond diafolds & benchstones on all of my knives with much success and the Electrician is no different. It sharpens easily, maintains an edge for long enough. I never let it get too dull before I resharpen it. I'm very happy with it overall and find it as a great addition to my EDC lineup.

One of the best, flawless fit, finish, and utility. For those who are not familiar with the "Alox" Victorinox knives, these have a legacy-base with the original military issue SAKs, and even shares components with SAK knives issued to various European Militaries into the early 2000s. That said, these are _robust_ with tools and blades that are about half again as thick and sturdy as the plastic handled 'cellidor' knives. I really can't get over how perfect these are. The Electrician is a brother to the Pioneer model, with the can opener replaced with a sheepsfoot blade, with a coarser grind wire stripper towards the blade/handle junction. Otherwise we have a sturdy spear point blade, an awl with a chisel sharpened edge, and a combination flat-head bottle opener driver. Missing is the keyring mount flange. (feels nicer in the hand as a result) I feel the sheepsfoot blade is a great addition, arguably more so than the can opener for civil day to day tasks. I'm torn as to whether or not this would be better with a classic bail-ring but at the end of the day it is just a great tool that goes great in a vest pocket.

Upon first opening this knife, I was pleasantly surprised as to how sturdy this pocket knife is. Both the aluminum casing and the stainless steel blades feel expensive and built to last. The difference between this knife and my other Victorinox SAKs (which all have the cellidor plastic handles) is that I can carry this around the same pocket as keys without getting any scratches on it; the red plastic handles scratch extremely easily. However, the sturdiness does have a cost: I found the tools/blades in this knife harder to pull out than with other knives; however, a bit of lubricant and this should be a non-issue. Even though the alox knives cost more than their plastic counterparts (and may not have the bottom set of tools), the premium look and feel of the knives is worth the cost in my opinion. One last note: the Victorinox Electrician does not have a keyring (both good and bad). It is beneficial if you like to keep your SAK in your pocket as a standalone item, since the lack of keyring makes the knife's shape considerably more comfortable to keep in your pocket. However, if you must have a keyring, then this is probably not the right model for you. I like this knife quite a bit, and it has replaced my old Victorinox Sportsman as my every day carry knife.

With the large blade for food prep and the wharnecliffe blade for utility cuts, this reminds me of an Alox version of one of the old "Stockman" or other multiple-blade "pattern" knives. In addition to two great blades, you get the reamer and the cap lifter/slotted driver which is also a nice pry bar. Awesome knife for the price.

I have loved Swiss Army Knives since before there was a MacGyver TV show. You could say by first Swiss was a Boy Scout knife and that was back in the day such were made of carbon rather than stainless steel. This knife is no exception. It works well to strip wire and drive screws, not to mention open bottle caps. Even though I do a fair amount of electrical work, I'm not that sure I'd pick this over some of the less specialized models. It comes sharp and ready to work. It is remarkable we live in a time when such knives are readily available and at outstanding prices. I bought my Scout's knife for $6 or $8 at a time gasoline was $0.25 a gallon. In other words, my folks could fill up a couple of times for about the price of my knife which wasn't even stainless. You drive a pretty small car or motorcycle if the price of this knife fills your tank even once!

I have a knife acquisition habit that I decided to exercise on this very nice example of a SAK. This time around I wanted a thinner version of the farmer model which I also own. This time around I wanted one with two blades and I was willing to give up the can opener & small screwdriver. I've seldom used those, although they have come in handy a couple of times. Time Eclectic did an outstanding job at fair price and delivered earlier than promised. There must be someone there 24 hours a day as the package was prepared for shipping by the next morning. The product arrived unblemished, although the cardboard box that contained the knife got a little crushed in the bubble pack envelope. Not a big deal. The knife itself is sturdily built and the aluminum scales (handles) are well fitted. The tools and blades are more robust than the typical SAK and totally impervious to oil, solvents and ordinary handling. The fitting of the nesting tools and rivets is perfect and the tools ground and polished to near perfection. A minor thing is that the scales do exhibit some very slight roughness around the edges that probably occurs when they are stamped out of aluminum. But this present on my farmer that I bought over 30 years ago, so it seems to be a characteristic of the pioneer models. The unique feature of this model is the electrician's utility blade that includes a contoured half round chisel ground edge at the base that fits around wire / cable insulation for cutting & stripping. The straight section toward the tip is straight and ends in a rounded tip. The length is about the same as a standard pen blade on the plastic handled SAKs, but is wider. I have not tried the wire stripping function, but it looks like it would work just fine. Looks like it will be a little troublesome to sharpen though. No problem with sharpening the straight portion of the blade. After carrying this for a week, I can say that I like it and it works well. It is a 2 layer knife and surprisingly light. It is robust enough for most cutting tasks and would work well as an EDC emergency situation knife if you got lost in the woods for a night. It lacks a keychain lanyard ring, but that isn't important when pocket carrying. It's actually better as the keyring will snag in those loose threads in your pocket and make it hard to get loose. The checkering on the grips gives good purchase without wearing holes in your pocket. Now about the electrician blade. I would just as soon that the blade was a straight utility blade and a little bit longer. The little divot at the base doesn't serve any useful purpose for me personally. Still, a second blade is good in case the main blade becomes broken or too dull to use safely.

This Swiss makes for a gorgeous gift for any handy guy or gal. This was a going away present for a co-worker moving on to electrician work. He called my husband back to tell him all the uses he found after admiring its beauty at gifted moment. We have used Victorinox for years and continue to be impressed with the quality and useability and durability of their products. Only had one mishap that was quickly fixed and satisfied with replacement and timing. Even those who may not think they are pocket knife guys will find good use with these.

Extremely well crafted pocket knife. Everything is rock solid and the alox exterior looks practically indestructible. I have no doubt that this would make an excellent knife for many uses. It is a little larger than most Swiss Army Knives, but probably more useful for this extra size. The smaller 'wire stripper' blade is extremely robust. There are a couple of strange tool choices, it has a reamer, but no Philips head screwdriver, which seems bizarre for a knife called the "electrician". It also lacks a split-ring, which is a pity as I would like to hang it from a carabiner. However if the tool choices fit your needs, and you don't need a locking blade, this would be a great pocket knife for EDC.

This knife is elegant Swiss simplicity. It's a little longer than models with a keychain loop at the end. At the same time it is more slender. This is excellent EDC that ought to last a lifetime. Well worth the investment. ⭐
