Q: Looking to buy this for my wife as a Christmas gift. We live in Houston, TX. How heavy is the comforter? Will it be too much for Houston weather?

I think you would be fine. I live in San Francisco and it's perfect, not a heavy smothering comforter at all. At any rate, you would most likely have the air on in the summer. Also, I never use this as a cover when I sleep. I think your wife would be very happy with this gift, its very nice; so pretty and a great quality for the price - good shopping.

Q: is it machine washable?

yes, it is 100% cotton,have not ever washed it and when i do, i,ll use a lg.commerical size washer to not bunch it up and cause wrinkles. it is a beautiful set!!!
