The ARRL Extra Class License Manual

On a whim, I decided to get a ham radio license. I ordered the Kindle version of the Technician book, but found that studying from that format wasn't easy, so I ordered the spiral bound versions of the Technician, General and Extra books. I spent about a month going through all three and passed the exams with 100, 100, and 96 respectively. Ok, I'm already an electrical engineer and the holder of a General Radiotelephone Operator's License, so the rules and operating procedures were the only unfamiliar material.The books - all three - are organized in a way that makes learning the material easy. ARRL has online test-taking that you can use free, so review is simple. I would read each chapter, check out the referenced questions and answers as they came up, and then took sample exams. After a couple of iterations, I was ready for the tests, and sailed through them.If you are considering getting the Technician, or upgrading to General or Extra, I don't think you can go wrong with these books. They are well-written and designed to teach you the material, not merely prep you for the exams. Don't get the Kindle versions as the graphs and diagrams aren't readable. The spiral-bound versions, although a bit more costly, are easier to work with than the conventionally-bound books, so I think they're a good investment. The writing is clear and concise. All subjects are covered. Good answer key. I purchased the spiral bound book and it is of high quality, lays flat for study, and the print is a good size. The spiral is just a few cents more than the paperback so I highly recommend it. The Kindle version is over priced in my opinion. EDIT: I am changing my review from 4 to 5-stars as my only complaint was addressed and correct which was I could get registered to used the online exams. This book has everything you need when used with the online exam to obtain your license.

I'm giving the Kindle version of this book a 2 star rating, not because the material is lacking, but because many sections of the book have become unreadable on iPhone and iPad and I have found no way to get support. Affected sections include, among others, the table of contents and sections with a blue background. This was not the case when I first purchased the book. Perhaps the problem is related to Kindle Reader and/or iOS software updates since the purchase. At first, I thought the text was in another language/character set. But when I highlighted text and did a google lookup, I found that it's English, formatted in a way that makes it unreadable. I wonder if others have experienced this.

Like the Technician and General Class short wave test prep books from ARRL.org the Extra Class is edition is a concise, and well-organized reference. If you're primary interest is passing the Extra test, combining this reference with the online exam prep at ARRL (arrlexamreview.appspot.com) is a way to get it done. If you have a technical background it's a fast read. (I was a physics major, so that's my reference point). If you aren't technical there are appropriately-placed references to online tutorials to fill in the gaps. The time spent is worth it because this material is applicable to everything from cell phones (which are actually just radios), to your home wifi system and many other topics like security cameras and tracking the International Space Station. But, if you just want to pass the test quickly, you can just review the questions - they're public domain. Good luck on your journey !

As I bash my head against the wall studying for my Extra license test, this book has been an invaluable study aid. I have not formal electronics background and frankly math isnt my strong suit. But this book combined with the ARRL Understanding Basic Electronics book is bootstrapping me quite nicely. I also have Gordon Wests' book and use both but I find myself frequenting this book more often.

The Amateur Extra Class exam is comprehensive and covers tons of information. This manual will prepare you for the exam and covers every topic that is covered by the examination. I started out with the Kindle version of this manual, just as I did with the Technician and General class manuals, but found the spiral wound manual to be preferable for studying this topic since I found myself jumping back and forth through topics and pages. I used this manual to study for the Extra Class exam and passed it the first time.

I had another Extra book (and accompanying CDs that I listened to religiously every time I was in the car). Took the Extra Exam twice and failed both times. I bought the ARRL Extra Class License Manual and immediately realized that the other book wasn't teaching me the "why" behind the questions. I haven't taken the Exam again yet but I know if I read through this one a couple times I have a much better chance of passing on the next go around. I highly recommend this book.Only downside is that the big is quite large. It's not something you're going to be able to casually pick up at bedtime and read a chapter before you go to bed--because of the size you're probably going to want to study this at a desk or table and that might, in terms of learning and actually passing the exam, be a better way to go.

Even if you don't use it to study for your Extra, it is an absolute wealth of information. It gives you enough information to understand why an answer is what it is.To study and pass the test, I used hamtestonline dot com. I passed the Technician and the General in one sitting, and worked a month (ish) and passed the Extra. The Extra I got 47 of 50 right. Total study time for all 3 was 65 hours and change (one of the benefits of HTOL). Cost of membership is about the cost of one ARRL manual (each). Adaptive learning, simulated tests, focus study areas etc. Free to try. And I have NO affiliation with HTOL.

I purchased the ARRL Extra Class manual as another source of information, whilst taking the new RSGB Full license.Obviously, there are different license conditions between the UK and the US.But nevertheless it proved helpful; well I passed.

best way to study and pass the test. Buy kindle version, u can mark & highlight at will. Best, read kindle on big screens like 19" addon to laptop. After this, I passed arrl test with zero mistake for 50 question test! :)
