Lupin the 3rd: The Mystery of Mamo

The first Lupin movie from the late 70s is such a refreshment to watch In a modern world of reboots and cgi movies to sell Disney Frozen dolls, more close than the original Monkey Punch material, a great sci-fi villain and a heck of an adventure, is a completely Ying-Yang scenario compared to the second Miyazakesque Cagliostro, the TMS animation is magnificent!! (the same people who, a bit time later, made Akira, some Batman TAS and Tiny Toons best animated episodes) also the Cybersix series, Discotek Media included a gallery and all the available American dubs , I recommend the original Japanese audio with subtitles.

This is the first Lupin animated film the first film was live action this mystery of Mamo secret of Mamo whichever you like to call it used to be just Lupin the third when it was released in Japan during this time people in America watched it and thought they should rename it so to make a long story short it got renamed to either secret of Mamo or mystery of mamo but this is in the tradition of the series it is so much fun you get four different tracks audio tracks that you can choose from one being from the UK the others being older and it's just fun to listen to what was done previously I love the fact that you can choose the audio tracks and listen the time gone by by this one if it's the last thing you do this is the predecessor 2 castle of cagliostro buy it

Unfortunately, I'm not one of the lucky few who have read the original Lupin manga but I have seen episodes of part 2. This was done by the same staff as this movie was made during the "red jacket season was still running on Japanese tv. From what I understand, the writers wanted to make a mature, almost homage to the risque mature nature of the manga, a story they couldn't do on tv. The result is a happy marriage of the slapstick Lupin & the gang formula most people know and love and the (allegedly) black comedy of its source material.I honestly really liked this movie. It made me more nostalgic for the red series episodes. Normally, dark lupin doesn't work for me(ala Fujiko tv series) but this blending was good enough. I'm only giving it 4 stars as I still prefer happier, brighter lupin. I come to the series for adventure and laughs.So yeah...the third act. Look, let's not pretend episodes of part 2 didn't have funky or weird endings. There's an episode of Lupin where Fujiko is held captive and forcibly naked from the waist down for most of it. Yeah, its a bit out there but that's what I've come to expect from this generation of Lupin. I think people need to calm down.

This film is a masterpiece

An underrated classic which in my opinion stands right alongside Cagliostro in terms of overall quality and entertainment value, but for entirely different reasons. This is a more hard-edged interpretation, but still has everything that makes the series great. The dynamics and drama between the main cast in this film is really well done, and there are a lot of great action set pieces. And while the animation overall isn't as refined as it is in Cagliostro or Fuuma, the extremely stylized designs and hard-70's style that bleeds throughout the film more than make up for it. Highly recommended if you're a Lupin fan looking for an entry that's wholly unique, more mature, and also just a tad bit strange.

Sure the movies great but Discotek really continues to show their passion with this release. This includes all four English dubs of the film along with interviews and history notes on the dubbing of the film. You can mix and match the dubs on the fly to compare or just choose the one you want to enjoy the whole film with. It looks and sound perfect, it's uncut and it includes tons of bonus features and it really is the best way to watch this classic. Absolutely recommended!

Funny movie

I was happy to find that the original voice I was used to hearing was there. There was 4 option voice actors in English. The fourth option was the exact one. I laughed a great deal. Forgotten how funny this show was.

劇場版「ルパン三世」のアメリカ版DVD。特筆すべきは、英語音声が全て網羅されている事です。英語音声は四種類あり、1、キャラの名前が異なる(不二子→Margo、五右ェ門→Samurai等)1978年版2、カリ城の吹き替えで酷評されたストリームライン1994年版3、イギリス1995年版4、ジェネオン2003年版です。勿論、オリジナルの日本語音声も完備。私が所持するイギリス版のDVDでは、ジェネオン版が一種のみ収録されていました。映像に関しては、アメリカ版DVDは、冒頭の検死報告のシーンや、オープニング等のテロップは日本語そのままで、イギリス版では英語に差し変わっています。フィルムのマスターは、東宝版DVDとLUPIN THE BOX版DVD及び、日本版のブルーレイと同じものだと思われます。ちなみに、リージョン1になっていますが、機種によっては日本製のリージョン2のレコーダーやプレイヤーで再生出来てしまうようです。形式もNTSCですので、日本製の液晶テレビで再生可能です(イギリス版はPAL)。結局、我が家にはマモー編のブルーレイ1枚、DVDが4枚(東宝、BOX、イギリス、アメリカ)も揃ってしまいましたが、音声が充実しているアメリカ版が一番好きです。長文になりましたが、これから購入する方の参考になれば幸いです。追記Amazonでは、マモー編の輸入盤DVDが複数存在していますが、このレビューはEASTERN STAR社から発売されている(パッケージが黄色い)DVDのものです。

If you have seen any of the other Lupin III stories you will know what to expect. High Drama, Beautiful Girls & great comedy. The first Lupin III movie presented in 3 different versions. Well worth waiting for.
