Great grinder for the price/plenty of power
I purchased this grinder to cut some metal tubing that I was using for a retaining wall. The grinder arrived well packaged and undamaged. The included tool to change wheels is easy to use. The three positions for the support handle are well placed. The grinder cut the metal tubing easily and the metal cutting shroud directed the hot sparks away from my hands without getting in the way of the cut. I also used the grinder to make clean plunge cuts on a metal garage cabinet for an electrical outlet. Again the grinder performed well and made the cuts easily. The trigger safety mechanism keeps you from accidentally starting the grinder unintentionally but can easily be operated with one hand.Overall I am very happy with the grinder I just wish it came with a hard or soft carrying case, but for the price I can't complain.

Great little grinder.
Nice little grinder. Enough power for my needs. I cut up a water tank to make a dozer blade and it worked great. Comes with 2 guards; one for grinding and one for cutting. Excellent price too. Just a little more than Harbor Freight stuff but way higher in quality. Porter Cable makes good tools. I have other tools by them and love them all and they won't bust the budget either.

and safety practices are followed (goggles as a requirement for use) this is a good tool if you do not have a frequent use ...
Works well enough as a basic tool. So long as the instructions of use are followed, and safety practices are followed (goggles as a requirement for use) this is a good tool if you do not have a frequent use for a grinder. I bought it so I could scrap and melt down some alluminum for some fun side projects after I realized that a reciprocating saw's blades are extremely expensive and the length is unsuitable for my purposes. The whole "hands feel like putty" experience of the reciprocating saw's action was also a little uncomfortable. It generally fufilled my needs for it; the reciprocating saw and the grinder generally had even speeds with very thin metal (around 1/8-1/16th thickness) but when it came to sections between 1/4th and 1/2fth of an inch the grinder was far superior in terms of speed. As for ease of use in cutting, it was FAAAAR more comfortable and light compared to the reciprocating saw I was using prior. It can cut flat metal up to about 2 inches deep* but keep in mind that if you're cutting on a convex surface, your effective depth is only one inch max**.It's worth noting that the angle of attack that you use when cutting metal is CRITICAL to use on all grinders - ensure that you are using the weight of the grinder against the "pulling" motion caused by the friction of the metal and wheel to avoid slippage.Overall, if you don't have a grinder and need one to cut 0.5"-2" thick metal on an irregular basis, this will do the job.*it supports up to a 4.5 inch disk; however, the mounting hole is one inch, so you are left with 4 inches of surface diameter. However, given that it uses the radius as the cutting edge you can only cut up to 2 inches thick maximum. Furthermore, since the strength of a grinder is due to the friction generated by the spinning wheel, when cutting surfaces that are not flat, the effective "range" of the grinder is reduced further. Finally, since the cutting action is friction, the wheel is slowly diminished in size, and so the 2 inch range is a maximum more than anything else.**I salvaged a cracked aluminum rim, and I quickly realized that cutting the curved section was significantly more difficult due to the friction differences; if you're using the tool right, it should pull itself INTO the object you are cutting in rather than jumping outward. However, the circular wheel against a curved surface means that when those meet, it will want to jump off and resist since the surface area is so little. Once it gets deep enough to start cutting from the front though, it stops wanting to jump around but it still has reduced effective depth. d

It's A 7/8 Arbor Not 5/8
This is a great 4 1/2" grinder/cutting tool. Read all the reviews not sure why there are bad ones but I believe they were reviewing the lower amp model this is the newer 7 amp model and performs awesome for the price. The handle is not mounted at 90 degrees but on a small angle? which was weird but did not bother me at all while using it. The only issue I had was in the description it says 5/8 arbor which is true but collar that holds the disc's and tightening nut are 7/8 which means you can only use a 7/8 arbor disc with this grinder. I had purchased 5/8 disc's with this had to return them for 7/8 disc's. Comes with 2 guards a grinding and a cutting guard which is nice and they adjust with a locking lever to change the position of them which is great not having to look for a wrench to loosen the guard while working.

BUY IT !
Bought this to replace a failed Harbor Freight grinder. What a difference ! Powerful and has a nice paddle switch to control it. Comes with two easy to change (tool less) guards and a cut off and grinding wheel.I didn't know what I was missing !! The cut off feature is worth the price alone. Rebar, !/2" EMT. sheet metal brackets on fluorescent light fixtures, cuts with ease. I used to cut with a sawzall, hacksaw, or snips - no more ! Fast and easy.Bought a Makita 4 1/2 inch Turbo Rim Diamond blade and using it to cut flagstone for a walkway. Straight or radius cuts no problem. This tool is reasonably priced, compact, versatile, and powerful. My only regret is I should have purchased this years ago.May God Bless.

Great grinder!!!
Great quality grinder. Much better than the $9 grinders available at "China Freight" of the $29 grinder from WallyWorld.Powerful, feels solid in the hand and provides the peace of mind when you feel the tool is not going to catastrophically fail in your hands (possibly sending you to the ER).I've had good luck with Porter Cable in the past, with corded drills, cordless drills and cordless drivers and circular saws and this grinder follows suit with the quality I've grown to expect from the brand. Are there better brands out there? Sure, absolutely, but not at this price in my opinion. Porter Cable offer a tremendous value for the money.I feel I'll have this tool around for a good long time and won't let me down.
