The Best Budget, Bi-directional Scan Tool
I've been using scan tools for over 15 years, but until now, I could only justify using a standard OBD2 reader that provided ECU codes. While those are useful for troubleshooting, modern vehicles have many different modules that can't be scanned by a standard OBD2 reader. Not only can the XTool A30M scan those modules, it can also interact with them through it's bi-directional capability, allowing you to run tests and even actuate controls manually. So far, I have scanned four different cars:2007 Chevy Malibu2008 Lexus RX3502009 Nissan Versa2016 Kia CadenzaI've included several screenshots that demonstrate some of the codes I've encountered.I downloaded the Anyscan app from the Google Play Store onto an inexpensive ONN Android tablet from Wal-Mart. It functions at what I would consider a normal speed when connecting to the vehicle computer. While some reviewers have complained about connection speed, I suspect that is related to the age of the phone or tablet they were using to run the app. The only issue I had was not being able to connect to the car immediately after installing the app. This was solved by rebooting the tablet and I have had no more problems since.Bluetooth range from the device to my tablet is around twenty feet, but is likely going to depend on your equipment's capabilities. In most cases, I'm sitting in the car or standing next to it, so range is not an issue for me.XTool customer service has been excellent, both before and after my purchase. They usually respond to emails within 24 hours and are courteous and helpful. This is a company based in China, and they have better customer service than many American companies. One of the main selling points for me was the free updates. The other two tools that I was considering provide one free year of updates and then you have to pay $60 to $100 per year after that if you want to keep your software current. That's not a big deal for a professional mechanic, but for someone who just wants to work on their own car, it seems like a lot. Also, there are some scan tools that only allow you to download updates for one or two vehicles, but XTool allows you to download all of the makes that you want to. I went ahead and downloaded all of the common makes in the US and it used about 10 gigs of storage on my tablet. About half of that space was from the files for VW, BMW, and Mercedes. I've had this tool for several months and there have been many updates available during that time for the makes I have installed.Overall, the A30M and the Anyscan app are easy to use. The tool itself feels well-built and solid. The voltage display does not reflect actual battery voltage, but that's not a problem for me as I will have already checked it with a multimeter. This is an impressive tool and I have recommended it to several friends.

Tried multiple brands of scanner. This is the winner
I'm not going to comment on the other 2 brands of scanners that I purchased before the Xtool as I have written reviews already for them , they were 2 of the popular brands.. Feel free to look at my other reviews to see why I was disappointed and ended up returning them . Had I known how Xtool was going to be, I would have started with them first. Here are the requirements that I had for a scanner when I started the hunt.Support for detailed diagnosis capability on2004 Jeep WJ Grand Cherokee2012 Jeep MK Compass2018 Subaru Outback 2.52018 Volvo XC90 t5I also wanted active functions to release the EPB on the 2, 2018 vehicles that were equipped with EPB. Backing off the EPB is required in order to replace brake pads. I also wanted ABS bleed functionality where available since getting old fluid or air out of ABS is a bit of a pain without being able to activate the ABS pump. I wanted to view detailed live data for all vehicles. My initial search focused on handheld scanners that had their own screen and I wanted to keep it under $500 . The first device from Xtool that I was focused on the was the D7 and then I came across the A30M . I read some reviews and reached to support to confirm functionality for my VINs. Support has been terrific and far better than the other 2 companies I had previously bought scanners from. Once it was determined that the A30M would work for me I purchased. It arrived in 2 days. Here is the beauty of the A30M that got me away from the need for a device with a screen. The Anyscan app includes lifetime updates and it works on anything running Android 5 and above. This allowed me to bust out an ancient 7 year old Samsung 10" tablet that was on the shelf and use it as a dedicated garage tablet. Honestly, this tablet was on it's way to the recycling pile before I found a way to reuse it. I know, android 5 is probably security swiss cheese at this point. I just created a dedicated Google account for the garage and have that on the tablet so there is nothing sensitive there. The Anyscan app is large , 1.1gb, and the updates are even larger. It takes a while to download all of the updates but this is no different than pulling updates for any other scanner brand. Since I had limited storage on the Samsung tablet I just downloaded the common updates for things like ABS, fuel, SAS, etc along with vehicle specific updates for vehicles I regularly work on . There are certain vehicle brands that I will never work on but it's good to know I could download Lamborghini if I ever needed to.After being burned by the 2 other scanner brands I went right to work testing the A30M on my 4 vehicles. I am happy to report that it does everything I need . Every function isn't available on every vehicle but that is with all scanners. I had over 20 back and forth emails with support over various features for the D7 as well as the A30M to check their availability for my vehicles. The emails were all followed up with overnight and there was a clear answer to my question. I've seen some reviews that have complaints about the speed of the scanner. Being that I have a 14 year span of the vehicles at my house I can tell you that the speed of the computer in the vehicle is the issue, not the scanner. Scanning my 2018 vehicles is zippy quick, even for live data. My 2004 Jeep, I honestly thought the app had frozen but it took over a minute to pull live data. This was repeatable across all 3 scanners I have tried. In conclusion, if you are looking for a portable scanner with no subscription fees that can be used across multiple vehicles and even multiple tablets/phones this is the winner. It's also great to know that their is reliable and friendly support available if you need it. A must have for DIY garage

Impressive scanner, lots of functions for the price
I am amazed at what this little guy can do. At first, I was worried it might be a waste of money- but now that I've compared this to my cheaper scanner- it's a night and day difference. The data logging and everything is just sooo nice. I had an intermittent misfire, and the data logging for misfires was very useful to help diagnose. It even told me which airbag sensor had gone bad. I love how it has the built in flash light and shows battery voltage. It also shows me so much more than any other scanner I've had before. I do hope that the lifetime updates will stay ongoing. Finally, the build quality seems ok- not too light weight and not too heavy. I havent had any problems with it physically so far.I appreciate that there is an affordable option for bi-directional and DTC scanning. I'm not going to pay $2000 to snap-on just to actuate/bleed my ABS pump (for example).
