The real thing
We are blessed that Dr. Yang has these information still in print. Most true Kung Fu manuals are not printed any longer. Many Kung Fu manuals, Martial arts manuals, books today are garbage. There is an old saying in Chinese.True Kung Fu technique is taught in a page. Fake is in volumes. The old teachers do not like to talk a lot. They keep it brief. There are many many information collected here. Many techniques. The thickness of the book is justified. My Chinese Kung Fu manuals are thin. As thin as a pen, or a post it note. Some are thicker. The garbage is really thick. This book is NOT garbage.I have not read the entire book.I have not found the chinese writings either as mentioned by another review here.If they are there, the Chinese writings were presented to prove the source of the translation, and for those, like me, who can read Chinese, can interpret the meanings ourselves. I have 4 of his other books, also have Chinese in the last few pages, but not seen it yet in this book. The Shaolin exercises are real. I have the Chinese version from another author printed before 1930. I haven't dedicated my life to practicing them, due to distractions in life. No I don't have an ipod, a big distraction today. But there are other distractions. and 24 hours a day isn't enough for me to use.The information presented here are gathered from many sources, I believe, and organized in a way Dr. Yang and his teachers would believe as appropriate. The diagrams on the 4 seasons were very helpful for me to understand the source of some of the 6 healing sounds, and how some people remember them in the past. You didn't see them ? You didn't pay attention. And you cannot read Chinese. The information teaches: Getting up before sunrise.Never knew the reason until I read it here.Lots of information. Too much. Depending on your age, you should only practice some of the information taught here. You cannot have time to practice all unless you are still 22 or younger. It takes 10 years to succeed in ONE practice/ skill routine. You think it takes 2 days ? 2 months ?2 years would built a foundation. And most "fakes" would take this opportunity to teach and make money.Update:The Shaolin exercises needs to be modified to be perfect. Take it easy.Take it slow.Or you will over exert and give up like I did at one timeThe clue is about our heart, and American way of isolating the musclesfor strengthening works here.

A theoretical exploration of Qigong
This is another fascinating book which explores qigong practices. What you'll get with this book for the most part is a lot of theory and a few exercises. The author does a good job laying out the theory of marrow breathing and other practices that can be used to achieve a deeper connection with the body, while also rejuvenating your youth. If you're not a practitioner of qigong most of this will go over your head and even if you are you may need to devote some time to taking the theory and turning it into practical practice, but this is invaluable resource to have.

Great reference manual
I am mostly impressed by the quality of this book. It has been a great source of reference and information for me as I am a novice practioner and until I found this book I was experimenting with various types of Qi Gong exercises. This book has provided me with many answers to some of the things that I have already been experiencing during my practice. How amazing is this journey of discovery and to have a great source of reference as a guide, especially when its difficult to find a reputable teacher. A definite must have for anyone interested in the internal arts, and I can't wait to read another of this author's material. My satisfaction is beyond words.

Contents is decent, poor editing
It is good that the author include Chinese text but the characters are too small to see clearly.

Undigested
It is wonderful that Jimmy Yang has made this text available by translating and publishing it; but this text does not describe a process or set of techniques that I think any Westerner could or would follow. Or maybe I'm just a wimp. A big contrast to Mantak Chia's books which offer instructions and processes which are very doable. That said, for the serious student it makes fascinating reading, very interesting, may clarify some points. NOT a beginner's book, or one you could learn the exercises from, I think. Others of Yang's books are much more accessible

A must for people wanting to learn Qigong meditation
Great book by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming. I had borrowed it from a friend, and the book was so helpful in guiding me through basic qigong meditation, I bought a copy for myself.

Epic
As a Qigong practitioner and Ba Gua student (an internal martial art) this book has utterly changed my life. This book and Jingui Qigong are the only sources I have found that actually share the truth about Qi development.A must read for anyone seeking to build and store Qi for self-cultivation.Recommended reading several times while also writing notes.Thank you so much Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming thank you!!!

I recommend this book to anyone into the highest levels of qigong and those who are curious about or question the best that is offered to English readers. Not for beginners, however excellent for research!

Rare and important information resides...
Considerably better researched, annotated, and illustrated then others. Some information in this volume is incredibly difficult to get hold of (thats one thing) but to express it in such a way that is SO accesable to the 'every day' person is really quite special. Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming activley encourages us to question scientifically the information we recieve, therefore making sense of it for ourselves and (if we're lucky and look deep enough) perhaps find more pieces to the 'puzzle' of a complete Qigong training routine. The first edition was published in 1989!, (I can't believe i'm coming to this so late, some of the info is HUNDREDS of years old) get it, read it, read it again, one more time, see what happens. A basic grounding in Qigong and a good teacher of Tao Yin or Tai Chi would certainly be very helpfull to get the full amount of information and so is not really suited to the absolute beginner. But for my money, the best book of it's kind out there... at the moment.Thank you Dr.
