My son likes the short stories that allow him to achieve his reading goals without frustration. Pictures useful but not overly distracting. We liked the numbered series to advance in a sequential manner. I would highly recommend these books to teach your child to read. Review: Well organized books, may be a bit long for very early readers - I really like these books and the way they are organized. The repitition of the letter sound in each book (with the letter you are working on right on the cover and the cute graphical letter used throughout) without the same word being used over and over alongside each other, which, for some, may increase wrote memorization rather than reading ability, is something I find particularly helpful. With that said, I found these were maybe a bit too long for some truly beginning readers as there are a lot of words on each page and a good number of pages. This increases the amount of time little ones need to focus to finish each individual page and, by extension, the entire book. Finishing pages and whole books often helps little ones feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. So we've bought other, shorter ones that we also love (Bob Books) and are using those first. We'll transition to these again, and use when little one pulls them out, when little one feels a bit more confident and to practice reading for a bit longer. So, in conclusion, these are great books for little readers. Just know your kid, or make your best guess, on what will motivate them. A (hopefully helpful) note: we also bought the DVDs that go with these. They are cute and engaging for the littles, and the alphabet song is helpful and catchy. However, they do teach some of the letter sounds incorrectly, per what I've been instructed to do after consulting with a reading specialist, and, quite honestly, what makes sense when you think about it. For instance, the 'b' sound should just be the 'b,' not 'ba.' When you read the word 'bed,' for instance, you don't say 'ba-ed,' you say 'b-e-d.' My little corrects these on her own now as she knows this but at first it sent her a bit backwards in reading. Now she just says "why do they keep saying that?" and enjoys correcting the sounds. I will say I wish I hadn't bought them as it can be confusing for kids and the value for the money isn't there in my opinion. I had done so as ww don't like too much TV though sometimes can't engage directly and in those instances wanted something educational (more often than not).
