More of a Travel Guidebook than a Technical Resource
This was a very enjoyable read, particularly for a guy raised on west coast trout and steelhead, now doing the east coast striper thing in a variety of settings, with zero bonefish experience but upcoming opportunities related to family travel. That said, be aware that of this ~300ish page book, only about 80 pages are devoted to bonefishing philosophy/gear/techniques/tactics, with the preponderance of the book describing in great detail an amazing array of flats and beaches across the world. The author addresses these locations thoroughly and in an approachable fashion, but I was looking for a more detailed discussion of flies, leaders, and casting than is included in this book. I'd look at as more of a travel and planning resource than a technical resource, and if that's what you're looking for then by all means pick it up.

Great resource - needs updating.
I read and used the book as prep for my recent September 2015 trip to Abaco. Book is a great resource. You get a feeling that there is a very good chance the author really enjoys fishing and wants to share info and help others, but it has been written very long time ago and even the supposedly updated version (which i bought for my Kindle) is at many occasions inaccurate. I still would recommend it a lot just make sure you don't expect to find all locations indicated here as they simply are no longer accessible.Hope these guys will go fishing soon and write a new version...!

I'd just skip to what I needed to know and it was great. He did a great job though and I ...
This book and Chico's book helped my catch many bones on my first trip to bonefish flats. This book gave me bare essentials to what mattered in bone fish fishing and Chico's elaborated it. I recommend having both books if you have never bone fished. Maybe just this one if your already experienced with bone fishing. There are so many little subtle things you need to see and feel when fishing to be successful. You just can't get lucky with bonefish. You really need some knowledge to find them..see them... hook them and even fighting them entails special knowledge. I highly recommend this book as a bare minimum

Excellent Information
If you are planning bonefishing adventure whether on your own or with a guide, this book is a must have, especially if you are bringing your better half. The section on gear and leader builds alone makes this book a value worth owning.

I can't say enough about this book...
I can't say enough about this book. It is, without a doubt, the single most important reason I succeeded bonefishing in Mexico this winter. Rod covers everything - from wading correctly in the flats, to building a leader, to fly selection. Simply put, I could not have done it without him. There were dozens of learning moments when I would spook a fish, or trout set, only to think back on what I read, ready myself to correct it the next time, and sure enough, I landed fish. No, I SLAYED it. I just hope one day i get to shake Rod's hand.

Super Detailed Information
I wish I would have had this book years ago.....I've fished many of the places Rod very thoroughly goes over in his book and am sure I would have caught more Bones and cut way down on the learning curve had I have had Do It Yourself Bonefishing in my bag.. Rod goes into great detail not only on where, when, and how to fish the various Islands and locations but also tells where to stay and the pros and cons of various aspects and attractions that can only be learned by spending a lot of time there. This book is a must for anyone that travels for either hard core Bonefishing or with a nonfishing partner as it rates the " spouse friendliness " of each destination. I originally purchased the book in hard copy, but after my fishing buddies kept borrowing it and I wouldn't have it to refer to, I also got it for my Kindle. The book is both informational and well written and I recommend it highly. Rick heimi

and it is an excellent book for a 'do it yourself' Bone fishing enthusiast
This book will appeal to both the experienced and novices to the sport as there is a wealth of information and tips on tackle, tactics and methods, and it is an excellent book for a 'do it yourself' Bone fishing enthusiast. Lots of useful information on places to fish and how to get to the flats. Ideal for planning a holiday, even has a 'spousal rating' so you can see how other members of the family would enjoy the location if you slide off for a spot of fishing! It is a very good reference for places to fish and the likely quality and accessibility of the fishing and what species that you can expect to catch. Excellent information on places to stay, guides, car hire etc. In summary a great guide and would be a great reference book when you are on holiday.

One of the top few books in Fly fishing, buy it if you think you want to go unguided
Canadian author from BC, oddly. This is one of the best fly fishing books I have ever read. In a sense, a lot of books are written by people who either don't know "all" the answers, or are coy about telling you the answers. So they won't tell you their favourite fishing hole within one national park; they hold out on flies because they want to sell you some, etc...This is one of those rare books, that just lays everything out; in this case from the perspective of the self-guided person. Doing it yourself is a different challenge than doing it with friends who have all the gear and know the water, or using a guide. There are a whole series of implications that are going to cascade from the fact, you got off the plane, maybe have a rental car, probably are wadding, and so forth. So for example, the author suggest that seeing the fish is the critical first hurdle. OK, what is the implication of trying to do that when you are wadding. You will be lower in the water. If a breeze comes up, you can't just blast off the flat, now you have to change up to find fish in the wind. Etc...The author writes from the perspective of someone who will do all their fishing unguided, but also gives pointers to people who will use a guide maybe for a day or two, then strike out on their own. In some fishing, if you hire a guide, you can go back to the places he showed you later, and fish them yourself (etiquette aside). But on the flats, if you don't have the boat; don't know how not to get lost out there; and don't know why he took you to certain places at certain times, the fact you used a guide will not help you as much later, it leaves you very much in a similar situation as the DIY all the way person. There is no question you want this book if you are in this game at all. Even people who just like reading technical material about fishing will enjoy this book because it takes such a thorough approach, one could apply similar programs to catching other fish even though the methods used for bones are pretty specific to that fish, and some other flats fish..

Good value for the money
I got this book for my husband because he's never been bone fishing and I think it will have everything he is going to need when we go on our trip. The author is very descriptive, gives all the types of flys needed, pictures of them, talks about tides, seasons, I don't think he left out anything. Good value for the money.
