Q: Do you have to press the switch button four times to return to pc 1, even if you have only 2 pcs connected? (rather than 2 times for actively only pc)

I guess it depends on witch one you buy. This is what the one with 4 buttons on top has listed.: Unique design includes four switch buttons to effortlessly swap between hosts with the push of a single button. No need to press a button multiple times to cycle between hosts

Q: Does there have to be a screen shared, or can I simply share the keyboard / mouse with three laptops?

Yes, you can only share the key board and mouse and not the monitors. I currently have 3 computers sharing the key board and mouse with two computers sharing one monitor and the the 3rd computer has its own monitors. You would hook up all three computers to the switch and only hookup the monitors that you want to the switch. I totally love this switch!!!

Q: What's in the package?

Regarding the packaging of the USB 3.0 Switch Selector, there is a well-made KVM USB Switch host, a small remote control that can remotely switch (forgot to say, this is a KVM USB Switch, there are two switching methods), and a power cord, Connecting to the computer via four USB cables saves me the expense of buying additional cables. There is also an instruction manual at the end.

Q: Can I connect external monitor for display for connected computers, do I need usb to hdmi connector?

This is a USB switch. It will not work with HDMI. HDMI has 7 data lines, 3 clock lines, power and an HPC line. USB has 2 data lines and power. HDMI 2.0 bandwidth is 18 GBPs. USB 3.0 bandwidth is 400 MBPs. Which makes the two technologies not very compatible.
