Think Pink!
The Pink Panther movies are among my all-time favorite films, and I felt certain that I would give this collection a five star rating. However, the best I can give it is four stars. I know that the movie studio that owns the rights to the movies in this collection does NOT have the home video rights for "The Return Of The Pink Panther" (1975). Such a major omission can't help but detract from the overall value of this collection. The first movie, "The Pink Panther" (1964), was more of an ensemble comedy. David Niven's character was originally intended to be the main character. However, Peter Sellers' portrayal of Inspector Clouseau was so incredibly funny, he became the main character in this movie. "A Shot In The Dark" (1964) is very funny, although it must be pointed out that it has no connection to the Pink Panther. In fact, it's the only movie in this series that doesn't have Pink Panther in the title, or use the Pink Panther theme song. This film is not an ensemble comedy; Peter Sellers is clearly the star, and his Inspector Clouseau character is obviously the main character. Plus, this movie boasts the first appearance of Herbert Lom as Clouseau's boss, Police Commissioner Charles Dreyfus. His brilliant characterization makes a perfect foil for Inspector Clouseau. In "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" (1976), former Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) escapes from a lunatic asylum, intent on killing Jacques Clouseau. In this film, Herbert Lom brilliantly spoofs his starring role in "The Phantom Of The Opera" (1962).In "Revenge Of The Pink Panther" (1978), Philippe Douvier (Robert Webber), the head of the drug trade known as the French Connection, decides to kill Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers). Once Clouseau's death was erroneously announced, former Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) becomes sane, and also becomes Chief Inspector again. Clouseau tries to take advantage of his supposed death, and goes undercover with his valet Cato (Burt Kwouk) to find out who tried to assassinate him. Ironically, this was the last Pink Panther movie Peter Sellers made before his death in 1980. The movie "Trail Of The Pink Panther" (1982) was, like all previous Pink Panther films, directed by Blake Edwards. All footage of Peter Sellers in this film consists of out-takes and regular scenes from previous Pink Panther movies. The movie really drags in the second half, when Inspector Clouseau's plane is missing and, therefore, there are no scenes with Peter Sellers. In my opinion, Blake Edwards only made this movie to cash in on the late Peter Sellers' popularity. The sixth bonus disc was also a little disappointing. "The Pink Panther Story" documentary was too brief, although it was informative. Apparently, Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers didn't like each other, and didn't get along while making the movies. "Behind The Feline: The Cartoon Phenomenon" documentary, and the six Pink Panther cartoons, ended this collection on a weak note. I love the Pink Panther movies, but I really don't care for the Pink Panther cartoons.

Being a Peter Sellers, I have enjoyed this film collection, a valuable addition to my DVD library. Reasonable price as well.

Peter Sellers IS Pink Panther +++
This series of movies is almost sure to give anyone a belly-crunch workout via waves of gut-chuckles. The humor is of several types -- instant and ongoing -- noisy and quiet -- fast and slow. And, it uses sight, sound and touch to express all the fun. The spy crime mystery adventure action itself -- and the plot-twists -- and the settings -- is all fine, vivid and colorful. Then, there's the nostalgia factor -- Pink Panther is an easy way to visit the now-ancient non-pager, non-cellphone, non-computerized world. I even very much like the Pink Panther cartoons. The jazzy swing theme-music is unforgetable. But, it is Peter Sellers [and the other great actors] that really make this series so special. BTW "Return of the Pink Panther" is NOT in this particular set -- Get the Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies however you can +++
