The name "John the Baptist" is well known, now about the man...
A good biography of an important New Testament figure, told from a Mormon point of view. The Mormons have more data on John the Baptist than Christendom in general, as he is mentioned many more times in the scripture used by them than he is in the Bible alone. Part of the advantage of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in regard to John is the claim that Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdrey met and talked with him and were in fact given the authority to baptize by him. So they have quite a bit more to say about him, for example this quote from Joseph Smith:"When Herod's edict went forth to destroy the young children, John was about 6 months older than Jesus, and came under the hellish edict, and Zacharias caused his mother to take him into the mountains, where he was raised on locusts and wild homey. When his father refused to disclose his hiding place...he was slain by Herod's order, between the porch and the altar, as Jesus said." Even so, the volume is not thick, 112 pages, plus a bibliography, a scripture index and an index. The writer was an LDS educator and scholar; it is written in a scholarly style. One is expected to think about what one is reading. It is not written for a lazy reader or one relaxing for the evening, but for one who will put forth a little exertion to learn about the subject. It is well worth reading.
