Finally no more smoke!
We had a major issue with our wood burning fireplace causing so much smoke, every time we used it, it would set off the smoke alarms. We did extensive research and tried many options and nothing worked (cracked windows, heated chimney before burn). We finally read about the opening being too large compared to the chimney size. We installed this plate and absolutely no smoke out of the front. It was easy to install (2 people is better so one is holding it in place for a tight fit). Wish I had this the last 2 years!

Works great!
The media could not be loaded. Moved in our new build house 2 years ago. Haven’t been able to use fireplace because smoke would just boil out of it. Had a professional come look at it because installers would not honor their installation. He told us they had done a terrible job and suggested we try a taller chimney pipe or may have to tear out and start over. Too expensive! So after 2 winters of no fire, we came across this smoke guard. Sounded too simple to be true. Well I’m here to tell you before you try anything more extreme, give it a try!! Just lowering the opening 4” has been amazing! Physics of flu size to fireplace opening is now corrected and it works like a dream! Loving this warm fire!! Product is kind of flimsy but it certainly does what it is supposed to do! Love!

Works as advertised!
We recently had work done on our fireplace in our newly purchased, older home. Long story short, we ended up putting a stainless steel cylinder liner down our chimney to prevent further damage to the crumbling brick liner the chimney had. In doing so we went from having a large fireplace opening (into the living room) and a large flue opening (out the chimney top), to having a large fireplace opening into our living room and a SMALL flue opening out the top. Ideally, you want the opening up the chimney to be of a certain ratio to the opening to the room for proper smoke flow. Our new room to flue opening ratio meant that any smoke from a fire would now want to travel into our living room instead of out the top of the chimney like it’s supposed to. Enter this product, the HY-C Smoke Guard. The Smoke Guard does its job, effectively making our fireplace opening into our living room smaller, forcing the smoke upward thru the chimney instead of rolling out into our living room. The Smoke Guard installs like some shower curtains, using tension to hold itself up and in place without any mounting hardware needed. The instructions aren’t the easiest to understand, a criticism heard from other people that I can confirm. I was still able to install without issues. Our fireplace opening into our living room is smooth/level at the top and rough on the sides (from the bricks), so while it installed flush to the top of the opening, there were some small gaps on the sides of the Guard from the uneven-ness of the bricks. Luckily the product comes with a tube of silicon paste to seal any spots that need it. I’ve seen other people complain that it’s useless due to their uneven fireplace openings. I didn’t have that problem.Overall, I'm happy with the Smoke Guard. The difference of smoke rollback into our living room pre-Smoke Guard vs. post-Smoke Guard is NIGHT & DAY. This said, I purchased the 4" model, but I wish I had gone with the 6" model. I still have some occasional smoke roll back into the room, and I'm all but convinced that if I had the 6" model this wouldn't be the case. That's not a knock on the product, just a notion that it may be better to be aggressive on what size to buy as the bigger the Guard the more smoke held in. I was originally concerned that the bigger model would restrict our view of the fire, but I think most people would happily give up 2” of viewing area for even less smoke in your house. My lack of 5 stars stems from what was originally sent to me when I first ordered. I ordered the Guard in the flat black color, and was shipped the bronze color instead. My bottom line: Works great IF you have straight/level fireplace openings, buy bigger than you’re thinking to prevent any and all smoke rollback, & don’t be surprised if you’re shipped the wrong color.

Worth every penny
We’ve lived in our house for 6 years (built in 1959). Every fall/winter we try to have a fire but it smokes up our whole house so we gave up. I’ve had fireplace professionals out to inspect it and “nothing is wrong, the chimney is clean.” After spending some time researching, I came across this product. I was very skeptical at first, sounded too good to be true. We’ve had this guard for about a week now and have had fires going all day long (12+ hours) and it works amazing! Our only issue is that the guard doesn’t stay in place very well with the way our brick is stacked. It’s siliconed in now so we’ll see how long it stays before falling again. It is still worth every penny though! Side note: I have an air purifier in the same room, the light turns red when the air qualify is bad, which it did previously when we tried to have fires without the guard. With the guard the light has stayed blue, which means the air is clean.

Fixed my smoking fireplace
A really inexpensive way to reduce the size of the fireplace opening to improve chimney draft. Easy to install and so far seems quite durable and sturdy.

I would buy this 100 times over if I needed to.
I would buy this 100 times over if I needed to. We had horrible problems with smoke filling out living room until I purchased this. It solved the problem instantly. Solid metal quality. Very thick and fits perfectly. The magnet strength is good and I've had no issues with fire protection or air circulation because of it.
