The Battle of Minden 1759: The Impossible Victory of the Seven Years War Paperback – Import, 13 October 2020

Very good book, well researched. Liked the fact that important documents are added in full length as appendices. Arguably biased towards the officer corps. Additional maps would be beneficial to aid understanding of situational complexity and movement.

There are already quite a few books in English on the so-called 'French and Indian War' fought between the French and the British in North America. This book does a terrific job of exploring the much less well-known contemporary campaigns fought between the French and their British and German allies in Western Europe. Reid offers a well-researched narrative of these campaigns that range from coastal France to Western Germany, carefully following events that led up to the key British victory at Minden in 1759. There is much here for military historians to consider (footnotes are extensive as are the sources), but I also found the book to be a surprisingly entertaining read that is easily accessible to general audiences. Highly recommended for both serious scholars -- and anyone who enjoys a good story about the heroics of the British army. I wish I could give this book a sixth star!

Lange erwartet liegt es nun vor mir: Das Buch zur Schlacht von MInden 1759, als eine stärkemäßig unterlegene alliierte Streitmacht gegen die überlegenen Franzosen/Sachsen gewann. Eigentlich ein Thema für Filme, Bücher etc. Nun gibt es das erste neuzeitliche (dem aktuellen Stand entsprechende) Buch.Zur "Hardware": das Buch ist gebunden mit Schutzumschlag. Die Bindung ist okay, so dass sich wohl keine Seiten lösen wedren. Das Papier ist matt und recht dünn, ein Fototeil in der Mitte ist auf seidenmattem Papier gedruckt, alles schwarz weiß.Da ist der erste Kritikpunkt: Es werden Knötel-Uniformtafeln abgedruckt und Fotos von Gemälden...aber in s/w. Gut, sicher eine Preisfrage der Herstellung, aber es ärgert einen doch. Ebenso sind die zwei Karten als s/w Abdrucke drin. Zur Verdeutlichung der Truppenbewegungen hätte ich mir zusätzlich enie oder mehrere moderne Karten mit Bewegungsmustern gewünscht. Aber man kann nicht alles haben.Das Buch selbst ist gut geschrieben, gut lesbar, auch mit Schulenglischkentnissen. Das erste Driitel beschreibt die Vorgeschichte, ein Viertel die Schlacht an sich, der Rest sind Nachbetrachtungen, Order of Battle (also Schlachtordnungen), dazu Verlustlisten. Ja, genau. ein Viertel des Buches beschriebt die Schlacht an sich, also das Gefecht an sich. Das ist mir an sich zu wenig und würde als fehlendes Kernthema eher nur 2-3 Sterne bedeuten, aber die Anklagen sind super: Es werden genaue Stärken, und Gliederungen gegeben, Verluste teils mit Namen genannt, die Armeen kurz beschrieben und ein gutes Quellenverzeichnis genannt.Als Gesamtbuch ganz okay, 4 Sterne höchstens. Der Bereich Schlacht um Minden ist in meinen Augen etwas kurz geraten. Trotzdem eine absolute Empfehlung, wer sich für den 7 Jährigen Krieg interessiert.

Great Book...

The battle of Minden was one of the victories of the annus mirabilis of 1759 where victory after victory followed British arms. Minden as a European land battle re-established the reputation of the British infantry for firepower and aggression. However as a battle it was lacking in episode after the splendid sight of six battalions (and supports) wrecking some of the best French cavalry units. Accordingly Stuart Reid places the battle firmly in context taking us from the defeat of Hastenbeck through to the field of Minden. He also takes us through the thorny issue of Lord George Sackville's supposed cowardice, an issue where Reid follows the line of Piers Macksey.
