one of the best things about the original was the throwback gag photography ...
I'm actually giving this film an extra star for the boost in production quality over Crazy I, but then, one of the best things about the original was the throwback gag photography that reminded me of the Keystone Cops era. I didn't find much of that here. Crazy II's smoother, polished vibe takes some of the fun out of the off-beat quality that put this South-African franchise on the map. Having more money behind a sequel often raises expectations to a level that can't help but disappoint. This good-clean-fun family comedy is nevertheless saved by cute performances from the Bushman's adventurous children, and by the mastery of his home turf in the Deep Kalihari, in which it is chiefly set. If this one had come out before the original, there might have been enough momentum to keep the remaining N!xau movies in the English speaking world, but the Bushman was hired away by Chinese production companies for the remaining 3 globe-trotting comedies loosely based on the original theme. Crazy II is the only "official" sequel, and it is clearly the best production, if not quite as imaginative as the first. The unofficial sequels that followed were intended for more mature Asian audiences, and badly subtitled. I watched them all for N!xau's expanded acting role. Except for the trained-animal scenes in the last one (featuring talented pandas), I would not call them family fare.

Just buy it now
This delightful, family-friendly movie will make you laugh out loud, and will also tug at the proverbial heartstrings. It is a must see, and is possibly even better than it's predecesor. Definitely a good add to the movie library.

It's a fun movie
This movie is one of my all time favorite comedies. It takes place at a conference in Africa where a speaker from the city shows up in the bush dressed in city garb and high heels. She is then whisked away in a fold-up airplane to visit some of the sites monitored by a researcher. It is really funny when the city gal experiences the wilds of Africa intermingled with a separate story that happens to the children of a local family. This movie is well edited that both scenarios are carefully interwoven without interrupting either story.

Nostaliga II

...
If you missed the first of these films, the title might appeara bit mysterious. The !Kung of the Kalihari desert are discovering their millenia of isolation eroding by intrusion from the white world. In the first film it was a discarded Coke bottle. Here, it's poachers and a quirky aircraft. Lena Farguia turns in a fine performance as a New York lawyer dropped [literally] into the !Kung's world. Her instant rapport with N!xau, who's seeking his two children was a highlight of the film. An even greater sequence is her dealings with two soldiers on opposing sides of the Zaire civil war. The introduction of one as a Cuban mercaneray was an inspired idea, and the actor. While this film doesn't have the innovative impact of the first [a Land Rover in a tree? ] it has the advantage of not being a 'sequel' with its attendant weaknesses. There are no idle moments in this film, from flying through a thunderstorm to dealing with a pride of lions. You will never be bored with this film. ...
