Q: What kind of plastic is it made of, how long do they last?

Thick plastic. Very sturdy trash cans I have a husky and a German shepherd that destroyed out prior trash cans. This has lasted the longest and is very nice quality. We were worried it wouldn't be worth the money. It has been and we won't be another.

Q: How do you keep the trash bag in place?

It has a small hook like projection that you place the corner of the bag through.

Q: What size bag would I use for this trash can?

I use a 33 gallon trash can liner

Q: Do the safco step-on trash cans have a feature to keep the lid in the open position?

No. But I imagine it would not be too hard to find something to act as a wedge in between lid and container to keep it open temporarily. Of course, not installing the lid would be the permanent solution if you were looking for that.
