There are batteries that stay in the clock at all times. Clock is very easy to operate if you have the instructions.

Q: Started using the clock last night. Works fine except this morning why did the display get very dim? It is plugged in.

Two things: if you are using Batteries the dim reduce to save power; other thing the clock have a bottom to adjust the dim
