Demystify the sushi bar experience Stuffed with tips and tricks - you'll roll, press, and mold sushi like a pro! From rolling sushi properly to presenting it with pizzazz, this book has everything you need to know to impress your friends with homemade maki-sushi (rolls) and nigiri-sushi (individual pieces). You'll find over 55 recipes from Tuna Sushi Rice Balls to Rainbow Rolls, plus handy techniques to demystify the art of sushi making - and make it fun! Discover how to: * Find the right equipment and ingredients * Understand the special language of sushi * Make fragrant sushi rice * Prepare vegetarian and fish-free recipes * Dish up sushi-friendly drinks and side dishes Review: Great Resource - This book is a fantastic resource (and a terrific value at under $12)! I am brand new to sushi - I have eaten it several times out at restaurants...but I've never tried making it at home. And even with eating it at Japanese restaurants, I was/am still pretty much a novice. The book explains EVERYTHING. It's about as comprehensive as you can get - covering everything from the history of sushi...to explaining Japanese words and names...to breaking down the equipment/materials that you need to make sushi at home...to providing step-by-step instructions...to including some really terrific recipes. It's written in an easy-to-understand style (you don't need to be a sushi chef to understand it). Even the layout is easy to follow - as the topics go in a sequential kind of order (they build on each other). In addition to all of this, the authors were thorough enough to include website information where one can purchase absolutely everything imaginable (equipment, supplies, fish, seafood, and other necessary ingredients)! The website info alone would be worth the cost of the book - as I for one don't seem to have much access to sashimi-grade fish & seafood where I live. Prior to the book, I had already gone out an bought a rice cooker, bamboo rolling mats, serving sets, wooden spoons, hangiri tub, etc. (a lot of which I purchased here on desertcart). But in terms of the actual fish needed for sushi, I wasn't really sure where to buy it (and which stores or companies were trustworthy in terms of product freshness and reliability). "Sushi for Dummies" has solved that dilemna for me. I've already gone to one of the multiple websites detailed in the book and have placed an order for bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, salmon, and a couple kinds of roe! What good would this book be if you couldn't find the ingredients or supplies needed to actually make the sushi? The authors take care of that with the website info they provide. Seriously, you really can't go wrong with this purchase. I'm so happy to have this book - and kudos to the authors who wrote it! Review: Great book for Sushi fans - My husband and I eat a lot of Sushi at the local Japanese Restaurant. It is always fun watching them make the Sushi so I thought to myself " I should try that too"!! The book is very easy to read, you learn a lot about the History of Sushi and you get a lot of wonderful recipes!!!The detailed explanations make it very easy and fun for the beginner to follow. I recommend to read the book from cover to cover because it is so much fun to read. But be warned, you will get very hungry while reading "Sushi for Dummies"!!!!

Well-written and informative
I used this book to make sushi over the weekend and found it to be very instructive and simple to use (as well as humorous and pleasant to read). I followed the directions for making the rice on the stove top and it turned out perfect! The detailed maki-rolling instructions/diagrams were easy to follow, and my rolls ended up looking (and tasting) great! My friends were all impressed. I also learned a ton about the cultural aspects of sushi that I didn't know before, and I considered myself fairly knowledgable. The only reason I give four stars instead of five is that I didn't feel there were enough recipes for different types of rolls, or nearly enough pictures. But the focus of this book is on technique and the process of making sushi (not necessarily recipes) and for that it was invaluable. I plan to purchase another book to use solely for recipes. Side Note: The only other special equipment I purchased was the Joyce Chen Sushi Mat and Rice Paddle Set. You can make great sushi using the techniques in this book without buying a lot of extra kitchen gadgets. I turned my rice out onto a large plastic bowl and it worked great.

Love it!!
I got on amazon looking for a few things to get me started with making sushi last week. Turns out, you don't need all those expensive tools and kits you hear about! Just buy this book and a $3.00 bamboo mat plus whatever ingredients you need (which are listed in this book!) and you're all set! It has easy to follow directions, great drawn out diagrams, lists common kitchen tools that can be used to substitute those costly tools so many sites tell you to buy, and lots of yummy recipes! Highly recommend this book!!!

Sushi... YUM
This is my first "for Dummies" purchase and I am in love with this particular book - it's well written, and layed out for ease of re-referencing previous chapters. The chapter on the rice is utterly amazing. The homemade vinegar recipe is very TASTY, and on my first try I made unbelievably awesome rice. I didn't have even half of the tools suggested. I ended up cooling it in a glass lasagna dish with a paper plate. Unfortunately I am only one person and instead of gorging on my tasty rice that day-which is suggested, I ate some and froze the rest in 1cup servings. I've gone home for lunch a few times already and grabbed a rice ball, thrown it in the micro and made some very tasty vegetarian rolls. Even brought some into work to share. Only veggie so far as I haven't found a fish monger in my neighborhood, nor have I gotten up the courage to get sashimi grade delivered to my door. Soon though....this book is a great starting point for my tasty hobby.

Very informative!
This book is not just a recipe book, it also has a lot of helpful information to help the novice sushi roller learn to perfect their craft. It has tips on what supplies to get, what ingredients and how to chose them, and some sushi history. I highly recommend this book! It has a lot of recipes and a lot of practical information on techniques, warnings and tips. It is a very well rounded book. I was able to make perfect vinegared rice on the first try using the information in this book.

Informative and fun!
I love this book. I just got it a day or two ago and I've already gone through most of it and tried several new things! Every now and then I find some of the directions a bit confusing (What does that say about me if this book is for dummies? Lol.), but I still love it. Even if you don't want to use certain ingredients or you don't want to buy certain tools, there's usually another way described so you can work around it. Great book!

Awesome beginner book
I decided to try making Sushi for the first time. I ordered this product as well as Sushiquik Sushi Making Kit Fun Easy . The book is very easy to read and the chapters that they break the information into is fantastic. I used several of the recipes in the book and found them very easy to follow and they were all delicious. The information was a little overwhelming at first, but taking my time to read through each section that I was interested in made it easy to use. I would say that 'prepping' was a big part of making the sushi. So make sure to set aside a lot of time to get everything together and prepared. After a couple of times making the sushi it became much easier to do.

great guide for beginners like me
love the detail in this book, found the section on sushi restaurant etiquette very interesting and will correct my mistakes - and of course look forward to trying the recipes. My edition was only missing the vocabulary cheat sheet which is why mine was so cheap so I'm still giving it a 5.
