Great value for the sheer length of paper, but thin. Full details below.
Based on a previous review, I wanted to give some numbers for those of you that are interested.I bought this due to the price, and primarily for my children to use to color on and then recycle. With this in mind, I didn't need high quality paper (I use separate paper for wrapping briskets in). Now, I haven't even opened this yet, I have only done some calculations. The shipping weight was listed as 18 pounds, when I measured it, it came out to 17.4 pounds. Based on the 18" width and the 900' length, I converted everything to metric in order to calculate the GSM (grams per square meter). This is the most informative number you can use when comparing any paper of any size or classification (they have different basis weights). When it all worked out, I calculated a GM of 63 GSM. To give you an idea of how to compare this, standard 20 pound copy paper has a GSM of 74.What this means is that you should expect this paper to be a bit thinner than your standard 20 pound copy paper, as it has a lower linear density. The thicker the paper, the greater the GSM.So, if you are looking for thicker butcher paper, try to find the GSM, and you can easily look up GSM tables for standard size and basis weights. This will give you an idea of what to look for. If the GSM isn't listed, Amazon usually lists the shipping weight. You can use this along with the dimensions of the paper to calculate the GSM (very quickly, convert the width and length to meters, then multiply them together, this will give you the square meters. Then convert the pounds to grams, and then divide the grams by the square meters, and you will have the approximate GSM for that particular paper). With all that said, I expect this to work well enough for my non critical purpose for my children's coloring. I don't expect it to handle water colors very well, but for markers and crayons, it should be fine. It will be easy enough to tape it to the floor and they can have a great 'canvas' to work on.

Beyond expection
The price is good. I got in less than 24 hrs. I have a low expectation of the thickness from some reviews. But 40# of butcher paper is comparable to usual 20# printer papers, far from thinner and semi-transparent tracing papers. Usual packing papers are also thinner than this. The only paper roll I can find in Lowes are masking paper, which is a lot thinner.I think it's exactly the paper used in seafood / gourmet meat department of supermarkets. It's also the same thing used for fish-n-chips, if you know what that means. The roll came in well packaged, protected by a few rounds of the same paper (what else?), which is somewhat confusing for new users. The mounting hole can just fit in a 3/4" PVC pipe. I made a stand with two tee couplings on each end.I use it for cage lining for small animals. I used reusable plastic sheets before but the daily washing overloaded my outdoor utility tub connected to the kitchen sink drain. Beddings cost a lot more and confuse my rabbit where the toilet is. He prefers to sleep on litter pellets and pee on soft bedding, but never on flat surface where he can't keep his feet dry. Being used for food, I feel much safer than masking paper and construction paper. I have to pad his cage with precision wood trims so the width is almost exactly 18". Otherwise he will rip-off the whole sheet to pieces in seconds.

It's for the birds, in a good way
I use this to line the bird cage along with blank newsprint paper. Using both types of paper, alternating sheets, works very well. We go through 3 sheets a day or more if needed, refilling every 3-4 days (the more in depth cleaning days). So much cleaner than the newspaper I'd been using, the only the downside being, with blank pages you see everything but with pets it makes it easier to notice any changes.I bought a cutter for this (and future) roll(s) ( Bulman A50018 All Steel, Rubber Feet, 18" Paper Cutter ), necessary for cleaner, easier cuts. The butcher paper is thicker than newsprint paper and while not necessarily absorbent, it does protect the papers underneath (no staining) and makes for a cleaner change.I also like that I can use this paper for other things if I wanted to, like for gifts or goods for the freezer. I liked the paper floor idea from another reviewer, white paper would make for neutral gray floors if used for that.Very good price and many uses, I'll definitely be buying this again.

Expected it to be thicker.
This paper is about as thick as 20lb printer paper but semi-transparent. Based on the description of 40lb weight I expected it to be thicker than standard printer paper and not transparent at all. I bought it to put on the kids art desk so they could color to their hearts content and not worry about ever running out of paper, it definitely works for that. I am, however, worried about how it will hold up to markers and painting (will post update after we have some experience with those). The paper is also more of an off white when held next to printer paper, not really a big deal to the kids, my 4 year old likes that she can now see white crayons when she colors with them. The roll is really thick, as to be expected, and just barely fit in the art desk. For the price and what its main use for us is this is a good deal and when it runs out I will probably buy it again.***UPDATE***This paper holds up better than expected to markers and paint. The kids have finger painted on it with no problems, even with the thick and gloopy paint spots kids always leave.NOT WAXED OR COATED IN ANY WAY - For those interested in coated paper.
