Can this switch pass packets that contain 802.1q vlan tags? i don't need it to process tags, but i do need it not to drop the packets on the floor.

I bought a couple of these switch boxes and they arrived with power adapters that do not fit in a usa outlet. how do i fix this?

The power adapters come with an additional attachment in a little plastic bag in the box. That attachment inserts into the included power adapter and should be the correct attachment to fit into your countries power outlets. They designed it that way so they could sell this product in different countries and use the power adapter inserts to make it compatible with your countries power outlets. Make sure you look in the box and see if that power adapter insert piece is present. If it isn't, I'd return and get a replacement unit that does include it.

Do ineed a separate dhcp router in order to generate ip addresses or will this unit generate ip addresses on it's own?

Yes. This is only a switch, not a router. You need to BYO DHCP server.

Can my cable modem be connected to this switch?

If your "cable modem" also has a router, then yes. If they are separate, then it would be 'modem - router - switch. I do not know about trying to split the modem signal with this but it would pass-through.
