Excellent Story
This is Paddy Hirsch's second book and continues the story from his first "The Devil's Half Mile". Both have been well written and tell the gritty story of life in New York around 1800 and his descriptions are very evocative and paint a vivid picture. A good storyline too which carries you forward without sagging in the middle and I enjoyed this second book even more that the first. It is not cozy reading, so be prepared for fairly graphic detail, but this is absolutely right in the context of the story without being gratuitous. Excellent book

Great Second Installment
Surprised by how much I enjoyed this second installment. Typically, I find the middle books of trilogies a snoozefest. Not the case here. Lots of compelling plot twists and turns. I was so grateful to have a map in this book. Made referencing so much easier. I'm very much looking forward to the third book. *Additional thoughts: I found the subject matter of this book timely in its own way, too. It seemed an important examination of issues that still plague us today. Hirsch's attention to detail also fills the story in quite a bit. He is very descriptive which really helps fill in the picture.

Good addition to the series
I like the characters and the setting in old New York. This book heavily used vernacular of the time period, the "flash", as the author called it. While there was a Glossary at the end of the book, it would have been much more helpful to have that located at the beginning. It was distracting to have to look up the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases.
