SoCal Flashback
It wasn't until college when my friend Kevan turned me on to this band of SoCal miscreants. As a horror buff I'd heard (and seen) "Killer Klowns From Outer Space" and liked the riff but never went into them further. One night he brought in some of their stuff for our radio show and I was impressed at their sound. Fast and aggressive but very tight and melodic and I actually liked Leonard Graves's weird voice. Looking around I came across this here and picked it up. I gotta say, it's pretty damn good. A few have criticized the band for having too many covers, but I feel that it only adds to their charm. I like the hyper-fast renditions of "Paranoid", "Eve of Destruction" and the Theme From the Banana Splits. Paired along with originals such as "Give it Back", "Shadow Man" and "You Drive Me Ape (You Big Gorilla)" you have a vivid portrait of what the California Punk scene was like at it's genesis. Man, it would have been so cool to see these guys at the Starwood one night and then Van Halen the next. I feel that this band played an essential role in the sound of what would become American Punk and had they have come along about twenty years later then they would have been all over radio and MTV. This and the follow-up album "Dawn of the Dickies" are classics and very much worth the time and effort.

GREAT AMERICAN PUNK ROCK !!
Got the picture vinyl record of this (Captain OI !) and it is very well pressed. This album is The Dickies' first and best album (IMHO). They are kind of the american response to the british fun-punk band Toy Dolls, only faster and heavier sounding. Lyrics are tongue-in-cheek and the vocalist sounds like a broken car horn. Sounds as if it shouldn't work ? Wrong ! It does, and beautifully. The sound is good but most songs lack bottom end so a subwoofer and an equalizer are mandatory.
