An interesting account of an important figure in British Naval History.
William Hoste was not Nelson, but was his protege. Nelson appears in this history, a central influence upon Hoste's life. Hosted himself is a figure comparable to Aubrey in his life and exploits. I enjoyed reading this book.

Well researched and written
After reading the introduction by the author, I was afraid I'd purchased a panegyric that would be less than objective in treating the subject. I am pleased to report that was not the case for this book. Well researched and tightly written, it flowed smoothly from quote to fact, to discription. Though light on the non-sailing end of career/life portion, this book can be combined with other books covering the era to get a fuller picture of the influences that created truly great leaders and men.

There's a reason we revolted
Turns out I really can't bring myself to admire 18th century British naval officers whose main interest seems to be making prize money.

I believe this biography is one of the best sea novels I've ever read
I believe this biography is one of the best sea novels I've ever read. The naval actions and tactics were outstanding and the author did a tremendous job in depicting Sir William Hoste's character. Kudos to Tom Pocock for this novel.

Boring
Compared with mr pococks bio of marryat this book is really thin. No real sense of the man. Very disappointed.

a good book , although it seems to me to spend more time on the time when nelson was still living than after he had died, but I enjoyed it , its good to hear about other sailors as well as nelson

A stirring read
This is stirring stuff. It is well-written and researched and paints a fascinating picture of the man and his career. He is not as famous as his own patron and hero, Nelson, nor as well-remembered as other Napoleonic naval heroes such as Cochrane or Pellew. This is a shame, as Hoste was clearly cut from the same cloth. This is the second biography I have read by Tom Pocock (the first being a biography of Captain Marryat) and I can recommend both of them if you delight in naval history or simply if you enjoy reading about daring exploits at sea from the safety of your armchair.
